Yet another Rome to Venice train question
 

Hi everyone!

My husband and I will be in Italy in March. We are planning on taking the train from Rome to Venice. We are planning on staying in Venice for 3 days and then heading back to Rome for some sightseeing. My husband doesn't want to haul our luggage with us on the train and then on to the watertaxi in Venice. He would rather pack a small bag to take with us to Venice and then retrieve our luggage in Rome. I have noticed that Rome's train station does "Baggage Consignment". Has anyone used this service before? How safe is it? Would this be a good idea to use or would it be smarter to just haul the suitcases around? Also, (sorry for all the questions!) I read that there is overhead luggage storage and then an area in the back of each car for larger bags. Is the area in the back of each car pretty secure? Would it accomodate a 25" suitcase or two?

Lucky you. A water txi. We haul our luggage from the train to the vaporetto. :)

The luggage racks at the end of the car will accommodate your large suitcases.
The taxi driver will put your suitcases aboard and take them off at your hotel.

Will you be staying in Rome and then coming back to the same hotel? If so, they will hold your luggage for you.

I've done as Ira suggests and left my luggage in Rome a few days when returning to the same hotel. The left luggage in Rome is downstairs from where trains depart. Here are the hours and prices.

You can also store luggage at the airport, but would be a hassel to retrieve.

Thanks for mentioning that the hotel will hold our luggage. We are going with a group of travellers for the first week (Tuscany, Florence, and 1 day in Rome). We decided to stay an extra week so we could go to Venice and do some more sightseeing in Rome later. I will check to see if the hotel would be willing to hold our bags for a few days. Also, I mis-typed earlier. I meant a vaporetto, not a water taxi! :) I would rather spend my money on some fun souvenirs instead of a water taxi. :)

Was your luggage secure when you left it at the hotel? Does the hotel charge you for leaving your luggage like they do at the train station or is it a courtesy?

Each hotel is different and some do not have luggage storage at all. It depends on where you are staying and if they are willing to do it. I had stayed at my hotel several days and was returning for several more. They had a luggage storage room, but I don't recall if it was locked or not.

E-mail your hotel and ask.

FWIW - I was in the Rome Termini luggage storage room this past week (wasn't storing luggage though). It's a manned desk (not lockers) and for some reason I seem to recall them either measuring or weighing people's luggage. I will ask my travel companion to see if he remembers as I wasn't really paying attention. Might be a size restriction on storage.

My hotel did not charge for storing my luggage (six of us stored luggage).

where is your hotel in Venice? - you may not have to get a vaporetto if it is near the station.
otherwise, the idea of leaving a bag in rome looks like a good one.

Thanks for the info. I'm leaning toward leaving our suitcases at the train station now!

I'm looking at hotels near San Marco, so it looks like a vaopretto for me!
