What are the best places to visit WW1 and WW2 battlefields in Belgium?

<BR>Jim,<BR><BR>We were in Brugge in summer 2001 & did not have a car. Thus we went with a small tour. We used www.visitbruges.com<BR>We were a group of 8 people in a van (including the driver/guide). He was knowledgeable & spoke english (as well as flemish, ducth, & french). The lunch was good. <BR><BR>So, if you will not have your own car, I can recommend this option. If you have your own transportation, perhaps others can offer advice.<BR><BR>chris

Hi, I posted a reply to a question similar to this last month; check it out (& others' replies) I rented a car from "SomeWear" {Roland Muellender is the owner} in Brussels and drove easily to Flanders which was a principal area of action in WWI. Ypres has a wonderful and moving museum devoted to the war. don't miss the "Last Post" EVERY evening at the Menin Gate theresince the 1920"s. I stayed at a great B&B "Camalou" in a village just outside of Ypres. She has a websit. There are cemetaries and monuments and museums all over the area, brochures from the museum will direct you, but look stuff up on websites before you go under Flanders, WWI, etc, that's what I did. Advance reading, which your interest in the the subject tells me you've probably done, helps, too. I enjoyed the flexibility of my "self guided" touring, and had no trouble moving about. Have a great trip.

We stayed at a fantastic farmhouse B&B at Poelkapelle, outside Ypres (Ieper) in September last year. It was right on Flanders Fields, and the owner was extremely knowledgable about what to see in the area. With a bit of research of our own, and her advice, we saw some amazing things.<BR><BR>I don't know about American sites - we saw mainly Australian and English sites, but they're all in the same area.<BR><BR>Ypres (Ieper) itself was an interesting town, completely rebuilt after WWI.<BR><BR>We were there on the European day or mourning (Friday after 11 September), and the sunset ceremony at the Menin Gate was just so moving.<BR><BR>We met some Americans who were doing a private battlefields tour, with a guide, if you don't want to drive yourself.
