Wurzburg/Regensburg Weather in April
 

Am planning a trip next year to these cities as well as Vienna and Budapest. We need to go at the end of April and I'm concerned about the weather. looking at historical weather data it appears it could be really chilly then. What has been your experience at that time of year in or near these cities?

This year Spring came early and IIRC it was fairly wet. I don't remember 2010, 2011, 2012, or 2013 (maybe 2013 was the wet spring that never left). I could consult the web for historical weather but it would be the same information you would find.

April can be clear or rainy, warm or cool.

Presumably you aren't packing for your trip this week. I suggest doing what everyone else does and check the extended forecast before you pack and use that as a guideline but still bring rain gear and clothing you can layer.

You can only deal with the weather.
Look at your itinerary and decide which are fair weather items and which are foul weather items, e.g. indoor museum. Do the fair weather items at first chance of good weather.
For example. You might have planned:

day 1: indoor activities
day 2: garden visit

but weather forecast once you got there says:
day 1: cloudy
day 2: thunderstorm

You might switch your itinerary:
day 1: garden visit
day 2: indoor activities

or even

day 0: part of garden visit
day 1: remainder of garden visit
day 2: indoor activities

It is best if you have looked at open/close days to have more flexibility in moving things around.

When my itinerary involves a high-mountain trip where the view is the primary objective, I would throw away an "orientation" walk and do the high-mountain trip first thing in the morning on first day if that is the best opportunity for a visit.

Forget the statistics. Everything can happen by end of April. And next hour can be totally different.

We were in all of those places last April/May. The weather was cool, sometimes rainy, sometimes sunny. My advice would be to prepare for all kinds of weather...layer, layer, layer. Also had an umbrella, which was sometimes helpful!! Some days wore sweater, down vest, rain jacket, somedays, just sweater. We adjusted our itinerary...ie inside activities at rainy times...as necessary. Sometimes we just got wet!! It was all glorious and a lovely time to visit as flowers were everywhere!

I think it would be a losing proposition to plan itineraries based on certainty of good weather in Europe. I think you increase your options by using a plan with options to switch to an alternate already thought out plan when you wake up to a heavy rain. Similarly, if you slept in on unexpectedly clear day among forecasted rainy week, you would not be able to capitalize on your upside if an alternate plan required waking up earlier.

September is much better for Europe than April.

It can rain any month in Bayern.

Of course but the temps are much better in September. We have been to Germany and Austria before and found September to be greatweathwrwise..

Each year is different and one year's experience is of no use as prediction for the next. Rain can happen any time. The weather is always a matter of good or bad luck.

Rain is not so much the problem, it's when it rains and is cold that is the problem and as I indicated we like September because the temps are more favorable - rain or not.

Again, the answer is "depends". But you seem to know the climate better than the locals.

It comes down to April or September and the historical data is pretty cller - go with September.
