Wurzburg - At the End of The Road !
I am looking for a great place to stay at or near to the end of that marketing concept called The Romantic Road. I have closen Wurzburg for our last night before conveniently taking the train on to Brugge toward the end of a very long itinerary in September. Any ideas, advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Hi. Topping for you, Syd. I'm not sure if you're asking re places or hotels. My only contribution is the little town of Miltenberg just a bit southwest of Wurzburg. One of my favorite places, discovered when we needed a place to recover from our flight into Frankfurt. J.

If I recall correctly, Miltenberg is quite a distance from Wurzburg, along a slow and very winding road. Cute but tough to get to. In Wurzburg there is a hotel on the hill above the river set in a vineyard. It's an old castle. I can't remember the name exactly but it was something like Schloss Steinberg or Starnberg or similar. It has a pool in a building outside the castle and you can swim and look down over the vineyards toward the city. Quite a cool place.

Our goal is to start in Garmisch and spend a couple of nights on the Romantic Road and then hop on a train in Wurzburg and get off in Brugge. I think this is preferable to driving into Frankfurt or Frankfurt Airport to drop the rental car off. Hence we were looking for somewhere to stay in Wurzburg or nearby that might be memorable. Recommendations for a restaurant there would also be appreciated. Thanks for your help.

I stayed at the Dorint hotel in Wurzburg. www.dorint.de/wuerzburg/uk/
It has a spa and indoor pool and the rooms were great. The mini bar had around 20 different choices of alcohol/beer/liqueurs.

Took a look at my map, and yes, the road from Miltenberg to Wurzburg does appear to be winding. I read that as picturesque, but for a quick hop to the train, perhaps not. Miltenberg does have a train station, so if you're still interested, check connections. J.

A worthwhile and scenic stop you should make at the end of your "road" is IPHOFEN, which is near Wurzburg. See this...

You could drive the A3 Autobahn east from Wüzburg to Aschaffenburg through the Spessart hills, then south along the Main River to Miltenberg. Back track to Aschafenburg to check in your car (if your agency has an office there) and overnight at the Hotel Aschaffenburg Hof, a block from the station.
