Wurzburg

I am planning a trip to Germany in April and wondered if anyone has had experience with finding their way around in Wurzburg. I have 6 hours to spend in the city arriving and leaving by train. Is it possible to walk from the train station to the Residenz and then on to the Fortress.....and back to the station? I know it's possible, but is it feasable. I have allowed 3 hours for the walks.
Another option is to catch a tram to the Dom from the train station. But I have never done this before and don't know the ticketing system. Help with this would be very much appreciated.
I will be travelling alone.

lifetrip-- a very popular tool to use is Google Earth (maps). Get Wurzburg on Google Earth and then use the features "Directions" to map out the walking estimate between the Central train station and the Residenz. I did and it indicated the distance is 1 km or approx 13 minutes (average walking speed). It also shows you the route (top view or "birds' eye view"). The distance from train station to the fortress is 2.2 km; definitely walkable, gorgeous walk (approx 28 minutes); but if you want to save energy and time for the actual sightseeing then taxi it out to the Fortress.

Oh thanks....I didn't think of doing that with Google Earth!! Although my husband mapped out driving times in our tour of England a couple of years ago and we found their times to be very accurate (We kept away from cities). Can you give me advice on ticketing of trams. Do I use a machine or buy from the tram driver like here in Australia.

I would choose either the Residenz with its garden or the Fortress. With either you would want time to explore them.

For me the walk up to the fortress is one of the highlights of a trip to Würzburg, so that is what I would choose. My wife might vote for a walk through the Residenz and its gardens. We both enjoyed the whole experience.

From the train station everything is in walking distance...
Calculate 20 min maximum to the Residenz and from there another 15 min to the Dom.
The Dom is located in the city centre, there are lots of nice buildings to see, the Main river is only a stones throw away, go to the alte Mainbruecke, there is a great restaurant and a cafe directly on the river with great views.....
Wuerzburg is a small city, to see it's centre doesn't take more than 2 hours, everything is in walking distance, you won't need to take the tram.
The fortress is very interesting and will give you a magnificent view over the city, i always went there by car, never walked or took a bus.....but it is on the other part of the river Main, best way to get there would be by bus and come back on foot.
Wuerzburg is such a lovely city, i was studying there for 5 years, and i go back every year!!!

I suggest you start with the Residence and its gardens. If you have good tour book you need not wait for a tour of the inyerior. You can do your own thing. The church is also worth a stop.Then walk to the Dom and the Alte Mainbruecke. From there you have a great view of the castle and the Kaeppele (pilgrimage church) on your left.If time permits, take a taxi to the castle entrance, poke around the castle and its grounds and enjoy the view of the city. Walk back down into the city. On your way back, the walk from the most northern bridge across the Main to the station is about 20 minutes. Wzbg. is where I was born, so - by all means - check it out. Along the way back to the station you will find a plaque on one of the buildings where Roentgen discovered the x-rays. No plaque for me anywhere.

I lived outside of Wurzburg in the late 80's and was able to return w/ my family last May. Had a great visit, it is a great city that is very walkable. Some of the smaller towns along the Main River are great day trips if you ever do get more time.

Side note to any former 'Marne Dogs' visiting the area...all the bases are empty. Very strange seeing the gate to Leighton Barracks and Giebelstadt locked up. No signs at either location indicating that these were Army bases for 50 + years.
Not sure what German government wants to do w/ them...I did hear they wanted to turn the housing area's into living space for immigrants and folks on public aid. The proposed tenants didn't think the quarters would be acceptable to them, so all the well maintained buildings sit vacant. New commissary and PX were built a few years prior to the closure.

I forgot to ask the most vital question of all. Does Wurzburg HBF have a facility for luggage storage? Please someone HELP!!! Where can I find this kind of info regarding train stops in Germany.

In my planning, I am trying to use the cheap Bayern Ticket for my daughter and I to travel around within a region.

It was so well said (!!!!) that the editors have decided to preserve it separately in the Fodor's Archives of Well Said Posts.

I studied for a short while in Wurzburg as an undergrad and it is a fabulous, interesting small city. With only a short while to visit, I'd opt for the Residenz, Hofkirche chapel, and court gardens. If you're able to manage a longer visit, add Festung Marienburg and I also really enjoy the Kapelle with the stations of the cross sculptures leading up to it. The Franconian wine is quite good by the way. Check out the Burgerspital or Juliuspital to taste/purchase.

No problems walking to those places. Wurzburg is a beautiful city. Don't forget to have some local Riesling!

Well, the German nation trashed the entire European continent, which is the sole reason the US has had a military presence there. Picking up a little trash seems a small price to pay in view of the ultimate peace and prosperity that the US helped bring about in Germany.

There are coin operated luggage storage lockers, as there are at most train stations in Germany. I have not used them at Würzburg but there are some comments from those that have in Tripadvisor.
