Wrong side of the Tiber??

Hi!
My daughter (adult) and I will be traveling in May to Italy on our first trip to Europe. We will be staying in Rome for 6 nights and I am thinking of trying to book at the Hotel Alimandi because of all the positive reviews and I am also attracted by the comforting feel of a family-run hotel.
My only concern is the distance between the hotel and most of the sites we'll be interested in seeing. Would we be too far away? Also, do you feel safe riding the metro in the evening?
Thanks,
Leslie

I'm sorry. The Hotel Alimandi is a few blocks north of the entrance to the Vatican Museums.

We stayed at hotel Alimandi a couple of times. It is a nice hotel, but it is only close to St. Peter's, the Vatican and San Angelo.

In December we stayed at a convent close to Piazza Navona, Fraterna Domus. We really enjoyed that - both the convent and the area. The convent had a much more personal feel than the hotel, and it was right in the center of the old part of Rome, a five or ten minute walk to lots of wonderful areas, Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, many beautiful churches and shopping areas. We will definitely stay there again.

The Prati area of Rome, where the hotel is located, is rather dull and unimaginative.

The Prati aerea is very chic, one' of the best quartier in Rome, but is too far away from everything...I was there years ago, we left in the morning and came back to our hotel in the evening, because the traffic was horrendous.. That was a good lesson for me, now the only places I will consider staying are the ones that are at the center of every attractions that the city can offer.

people have different priorities when choosing hotels, but for me central location is #1. (Clean and decent go without saying.)
It is important to me to be able to stop back at the hotel in the middle of the day to drop things off, pick things up, or just take a break for an hour.
There are other comforting, family-run hotels in Rome in more central locations, assuming they are not already booked up for May.

I have a file on Rome; if you'd like to see it email me at
[email protected]

good luck

Personally, I would stay in central Rome...Old Rome. Anywhere near the Pantheon or Piazza Navona I feel are the best. Like Elaine said, it is so convenient during a hectic day of walking and sightseieng to be able to stop back at the hotel to rest or change. Also, being central makes your exploring easier, as you have many more options and directions to branch out from. Again, these areas in Central Rome are so filled with amazing sites and local flavor that I would never stay anywhere else.

I stayed in the Prati neighborhood Feb 2002 precisely because I wanted a quiet place to come home to, and not stay in the craziness of the Pantheon, Via del Corso or Spagna. I stayed at the Hotel Sant'Angelo, a stone's throw from the Tiber and the Ponte Cavour. Within 5-10 minutes' walk are the restaurants of the Piazza del Popolo, the Pantheon, Piazza di Spagna. I was close to the Vatican Museums. I walked everywhere, and thought the hotel was a great bargain for the location.
