written guide for Olympia
We are touring Olympia next week. We booked a private taxi as there are several large cruise ships in port that day and we want to beat the crowds. Our taxi guide is not an official tour guide and can only drop us off at the archeological site and main museum. He has informed us that all the guides are booked. I am concerned that we will not know what we are looking at when we arrive.
Can anyone recommend a book or guide to help us navigate on our own? |
Do you not already have a guidebook? YOu have 2 options (I assume you have not yet left for your cruise):
(1) FREE AUDIO GUIDE - http://www.elladaguides.com If you have an i-pod, and mp3 player or smartphone, you can download this guide FREE .. to help you follow the Audio guide you'll need a good Map -- here is one: MAP - http://ancient-greece.org/archaeology/olympia.html - print out p 5 of this 6pp link ... to help u follow the audio guide. If you want to check out more maps, just Google Ancient Olympia Maps. (2) STEP-BY-STEP OLYMPIA SITE & MUSEUM GUIDE -- Go to your local public library & check out the RICK STEVES GUIDE: Athens & the Peloponnese. this is excellent for someone who has NO background and wants to get the main facts simply, in sequence. It's SUPER! If your neighborhood library doesn't have a copy, make them do a search of your city/area, and go drive over & get it. In my edition, its pp 308-330; photocopy it & you're all set!! |
Traveljan: thank you so much for your response. I downloaded the free audio guide and printed the map and some of the information. It was extremely helpful!!

Have a great trip ... KALO TAXIDI ! (that's Greek for Bon Voyage!)

I realize that this trip has already occurred, but the Blue Guide for Greece has an extensive section on Olympia.

Hello and the audio guide for Olympia sounds interesting
I take it you can chose a language (mine b English) and does it have graphics (i.e map of site) Can one also obtain audio guide for Delphi Love some more info Thanks |
Coolmover if you can spend some time doing research, you can find all you want on the internet. Website called Planetware has the best maps of all, IMHO, for all the major ancient sites... they print out. I am not aware of any audio guide for Delphi, but there may be one since I last googled. And a few googles will give you very decent websites you can print out for D-I-Y of all major Ancient Greek sites. That's how I've always prepped for site-seeing, doing the digging myself.
If that's too time consuming, you can get all the info you need with a decent guidebook that concentrates more on in-depth info about sites, rther than plugs for housing/restaruants. I have a shelf-full of guides, but my go-to is ROUGH GUIDE to GREECE. It's available for $7-8 used on Amazon (and u don't need the newest edition -- major landmarks do not change). The nice part is, you don't need to pack a fat guide, if you only are visiting a few parts of Greece. You can carefully pull out sections (Athens, Peloponnese, Cyclades), make a silver "spine binding" with duct tape and voila! Pocket-size guide-ettes. |
Thanks and Rough Guide have used for years ( they are miles better than Lonely Planet IMO)
As I try to keep to a limit wbat I cart along and also no computer/printer just tablet and smart phone think the RG Greece ebook might be better |
"keep to a limit what I cart along" -- that's exactly Why I say, pull out a RG section... 20 pp THIN paper 4 x 6"... how heavy can it be?? Also re maps -- u aren't going until May, surely you can find a computer between now & then to print a map. Just saying. However if the RG e-book is as complete as his print one for Delphi & Olympia, it will do you fine.
