Would you spend more time in Salamanca or Segovia?

Hi,

I'll have four days after an organized tour in October. First I had very ambitious plans about what I'll do in 4 days, but I managed to narrow it down to Salamanca and Segovia (scrapping Toledo and San Sebastian).
I was thinking 2 days each, and then going back to Madrid by bus from Segovia to catch the plane leaving at noon.
But maybe 3 days in Salamanca and 1 in Segovia is better?
If I could I'd go to the beach, but it would take too much travel time with bus.
We like architecture, plazas, sights and landscapes, culture, beaches, and will probably just want to take it easy after the tour.
What do you think? Any other suggestions for places to visit?

You will love Salamanca--more to see and to do. Good idea to cut back--you will be happier.

After your tour you will not be into long distances - 3 in Salamanca would allow a short bus ride to Zamora [much underrated] or Ciudad Rodrigo if you want. Then have a night in Segovia on your way to Madrid.

Again I vote for Salamanca ,in my opinion do not go to other places, try to stay a little longer in one place and enjoy it, getting the feel of it. Salamanca is lively, with the University and has absolutely beautiful places to visit ,....a fascinating destination

Thank you so much for your responses.
You helped me decide: 3 days in Salamanca!
We've never taken organized tours before (I won this one) so it will be nice to relax and be on our own for a few days.

If you win a trip may you are lucky in this one too, try to tag alone with permision of the Professor in charge to one of the informal guided visits for new students in the University. We were so lucky and did that and were allowed to get inside the library of the University which is a jewel with tons of incunables manuscripts.

From my own memory Salamanca is a quiet and historic place: ancient university, ornate churches, huge plaza for relaxing evenings, but also lively night life elsewhere on a main drag (forget name). Definitely culture instead of beaches here.

Easy trip by train from Madrid.
But Segovia does have its charm.

Do any of you have any thoughts on cool hotels in salamanca? we like the smaller type...with character and chance of meeting other characters. we're a couple in our 30's.
thanks for this string - it's introduced me to a new place to put on our itinerary!

Look for Maribel 's advice of new quaint hotels in this forum. We stayed in the Rector not bad, fits what you are looking for, but there are new boys in the block which might be better. Buena suerte.

Well, I'm back from my wonderful trip to Spain.
I'll post some pictures when I finally finish sorting through them...

Just for the record: I wish I spent more time in Segovia!! We found the city wonderful for wandering. In hindsight it should have been 2 days for each Salamanca and Segovia.

Other than that my favourites were Valencia, Barcelona, and Seville.

lindi,
Thanks for posting. We're doing a similar trip in May and I have lots of questions (will probably have even more when the time gets nearer)...

Were you able to get from Salamanca to Segovia without going back to Madrid? Seems I recall that for trains you need to, but don't know about the bus. How did you go?

Which hotels did you end up staying at?

Did you do a daytrip to Zomora? How about Avila?

Any particularly memorable restaurants.

Am also looking forward to your photos.

Thank you for posting.

Hi,
Sorry I've been busy (still am)
I just posted the pictures under "Pictures online: Spain, October 2004"

Salamanca has one bus station. You just walk up and ask about Segovia. They have two buses per day, one early morning and one late morning. Goes through Avila.
The Hostals we were staying at aren't really worth mentioning. We just got off the bus and found a place that looked good. In Salamanca, we stayed just a few steps away from the beautiful main square, for 32 euros per day.
Didn't do any side-trips, we were at leisure and enjoying it a lot. We sometimes made a picnic from stuff bought at a grocery-store.
It wasn't raining once until the last three days of our trip, when it was raining constantly. But it gave some interesting saturation to the photos - although it was sometimes a bit gloomy.

The photos are at:

Have a good Monday (if there's such a thing)
