Would you rather have a moderate wine in a nice glass or a Really Good bottle of wine in basic glass?
 

Seeing all the talk about glasses, made me wonder.

Although, I drink from Riedel glasses at home.....I would prefer a really nice bottle of wine in a basic glass....that is, if I had to make the choice.

A moderate bottle of wine may look better in a nice glass but it still won't compare to a great bottle of wine.

I agree...you can't very well drink the glass. ;)

People who would rather drink the cheap wine out of the classy glasses are probably the same ones who buy the counterfeit/knockoff pocketbooks!

I don't agree and I am rather unacquisitive and don't buy logo anything. There is a big difference between Riedel glasses (which I do not have at home and have only drunk from once) and really cheap glasses. I would prefer the nice wineglass with a moderate wine and probably because I am not a wine expert so may not detect the difference in a moderate wine (which is probably better than what I usually drink, which is $6-10 bottles of French or Chilean or Australian wine) and a really good wine. I think a nice crystal wineglass could affect my enjoyment compared to, what, some thick basic glass MORE than the wine difference which could be meaningless and just price for a label. There is a physicial difference in cheap thick glass in a tumbler or juice glass shape, but not necessarily in the taste (to me, at least) of a moderate to really nice wine.

I don't agree with Howard, it's not a matter of "classy" glasses at all, they could be completely nameless. Also, he has completely changed the post question from a "moderate wine" to a "cheap wine" and the point of "basic glass" to it being "classy" versus "nonclassy".

I'll go one better. I'd rather drink the best wine in the house right out of the bottle.

2nd that DRJ, I think I would also go for the best wine out of the bottle over an awful glass. Loaf of bread, jug of wine and all that...

I would definitely want the best wine in the best glass....

And as far as the best glasses go, I choose Baccarat over Reidel...although many may not agree.

Sitting on the balcony of our apartment, looking over the Amalfi Coast at sunset with my New Love, we
drank the most wonderful local red wine out of glass jars and I wouldn't trade it for any glass in the world.

I know that different shapes of drinking vessels allow different things to happen to the wine, the breathing and the nose of the wine, etc. but sometimes the atmosphere just takes over and you just don't care what vessel you have.

I'd rather have a free bottle in front of me, than a pre-frontal lobotomy. I'm sorry...what were we talking about?

I would rather have a moderate OR really good wine out of a WINE GLASS instead of either out of a water glass.

What does everyone think is a "moderate" bottle of wine? $10 - $20 a bottle, $5 White Zinfandel,the stuff that comes in a box, or whatever that wine is that is flavored with a splash of something like Arbor Mist?

If it is wine out of a box, then who really cares. But a good wine needs good glasses.

I am amazed that anyone would choose the quality of the glass over the quality of the wine! I know the glass can make a difference, but surely it is a more subtle difference than that between a moderate wine and a really good wine?

I buy very good wines direct from the Chateaux. In a 10 litre plastic jerrycan.

I reckon to pay around Euro 1 per litre (shouldn't be mean and go for the 60centers ?).

Of course I drink it from an engraved crystal glass !
