Would you go to Europe without hotel reservations?

I do think that the time of year and day of the week makes a difference. We were in Normandy in late March and had trouble finding lodging on the weekend. You may want to check each country for local school holidays, as that seemed to be the situation in Normandy.

<< Rex is known to get pretty excited about these threads re no reservations. >>
I'm glad that what I write conveys some of the sentiment I feel about this subject. Excited? Well, I think not. Opinionated, yes.
I guess you don't feel that JandaO is "excited" about this subject.

I know, Rex, excited was the wrong term. If someone would do a search here they would see that both you and I say the same thing about "no reservations" on these theads year after year (mine might be with a different name before registration).
We all have our opinions on the subject, no insult intended.

I posted a question the other day about traveling to Florence without reservations. I would love the freedom to come and go as our moods dictated.
However, since we're going in August and being 2 women (DD and myself) on our first trip to Europe, I think it's better for us to have reservations. Aside from the obvious advantages, it will keep us on the go, in case we get the urge to stay too long in one place, thereby missing other wonderful sites.

After last year's trip, probably not again, but it depends.
My hubby and I went to Spain and Portugal for 3 weeks for our honeymoon. We arrived and left from Barcelona, so we reserved rooms there, but otherwise, we searched in each city we visited. We ended up spending a few hours total in Internet cafes looking up places and turned up some really crappy rooms and some really great ones.
Now we're preparing to go to Germany and Amsterdam for 2 weeks, and our hotels will be reserved in advance.
We might be willing to not reserve ahead of time in the future, it would really depend on the circumstances.
