Worst place on Earth.

My wife and I are thinking about where we want to go one vacation next year (this year we go to St.Petersburg and Moscow) and we want to avoid traveling to places that are ?not friendly? to foreign tourists. We want to know where you think the WORST PLACE ON EARTH is and WHY? Thanks.

Russ Apr 1st, 2004 08:12 PM

I find Paris interesting. But I have never felt welcome there as a tourist. I just re-read Bill Bryson's "Neither Here nor There" and again chuckled understandingly at his experience asking for a loaf of bread in a Parisian bakery using his best high school French.

The attendant slaps a dead beaver on the counter. Bryson protests that he asked for a loaf of bread. The attendant turns to her bakery colleague, chortles that this silly man has come in, asked for, and received a dead beaver, and now doesn't want it anymore.

That pretty much sums up my contact with Parisians.

Lev-

Why so negative?

That would probably be where the natives think that they are always right, and don't care that nearly 1/7 of their population have no health care. Must be somewhere in Africa.

MALTA. No trees, very few flowers and surly people.

Penge.

No more needs to be said.

My daughter's boyfriend returns from Fallujah today. I am guessing that there were times in the past nine months that a dead beaver would have been better than ...

well, I'm not even going to finish that one.

Might anyone be wiling to join me in a salute to the returning heroes of the 82nd Airborne?

And to their comrades who have already to the tearful arms and hearts of their families? - - wounded, mortally or otherwise...

To Russ, and to the esteemed Mr. Bryson... I'll take Paris, thank you.

And the freedom to go there when I want.

Best wishes,

Rex

Russ, I am about to go back to Paris for the 8th time. Believe me, if I hadn't felt welcome each time, I would never have returned. I have traveled fairly widely, to 24 countries on 4 continents but have never found a place I loved so much as Paris. Now, Switzerland, on the other hand, beautiful scenery but cold, arrogant people.

Ann1 Apr 2nd, 2004 05:39 AM

I have always felt welcome in Paris. Why would there be a dead beaver in a bakery? Something sounds suspicious. Besides, if that happened to me I would have laughed realizing that my French needs a little work. The people behind the counter would have joined in. I truely believe it's how you approach situations that makes a big difference with traveling experiences. Some of our biggest laughs and fun were with big dumb mistakes.

RufusTFirefly Apr 2nd, 2004 05:44 AM

mamc--our experience in Switzerland was just the opposite. Just about everyone we met was warm and friendly and welcoming.

Parisians were kind of a turnoff with those nasty smelling cheese crumbs in their moustaches and all over their vests.

Scarlett Apr 2nd, 2004 06:03 AM

Weird, I have always felt welcome wherever I have traveled.

The Worst Place on Earth these days is in the news all the time..I would suggest getting a copy of the New York Times and do a little studying.

bobthenavigator Apr 2nd, 2004 06:25 AM

I nominate Scranton PA

kappa Apr 2nd, 2004 06:27 AM

Posts like mamc's make me wonder (and even sad), about Swiss people in his/her case. Why such generalizaion? Thinking of my own experience of travelling more than last 20 years mainly in Europe, there is no place I would not return because the people there were horrible. No, I have felt fairly well treated anywhere as far as I can remember.

Lev Apr 2nd, 2004 06:52 AM

I am surprised that a couple of people mentioned Paris. I was there and never experienced any problems. People always offered their help when they saw us opening the city map... I remember crossing from Israel into Jordan (One-day trip. We visited Petra) and it was a scare experience ? Jordanian security guards with machine guns traveling with us on the bus. Tense environment. But Petra was one of the most fascinating places I have ever visited. But I wouldn't go there again. At least now...

WillTravel Apr 2nd, 2004 07:39 AM

Rex, of course I'll join in the salute. I can only imagine how happy your daughter must be.

Steveboy Apr 2nd, 2004 07:55 AM

I've been to Paris over half a dozen times, and almost without exception I get a "bonjour monsieur" upon entering any establishment, assistance when I need it, and a friendly "au revoir" when I leave. Do you get that in the States? I would put a Paris metro worker up against their counterpart in New York any day for helpfulness. And have you been in a department store in any big U.S. city lately? Please. Paris is heaven in comparison.

mamc Apr 2nd, 2004 08:28 AM

Kappa, I guess I should have been less harsh about the people in Switzerland. I should have said that in the 30 years we have been travelling, we have been warmly welcomed in over 20 countries on many trips. We did not have the same feeling of warmth on our visits (2) to Switzerland. Maybe it was our fault but I have simply not had the same good feeling about those trips as I have about the others. And, for that reason, have not had a desire to return. But I know it is not, as the thread requests, the Worst Place on Earth. Perhaps it is better to not respond to such threads in the future.

Elephant Island, off the coast of Antarctica. Last toured by Ernest Shackleton in 1916.

Underhill Apr 2nd, 2004 08:36 AM

I'd nominate Interstate 5 running from Sacramento to Los Angeles: miles and miles and miles of nothing but boring landscape. It's so bad that you get excited at the occasional sign.

ThinGorjus Apr 2nd, 2004 08:40 AM

You have to be daft beyond all imagination to think that Paris is the worst place on earth! DAFT! As mad as Ophelia!! Paris is GLORIOUS! Some of you are too sensitive. Why on earth would you disparage a beautiful city because someone was rude to you? "Oh, never mind the Louvre, someone cut in front of us in the queue at the boulangerie, and that ruined everything for us. We will NEVER go back." Daft.

WillTravel Apr 2nd, 2004 08:48 AM

No place any of us are likely to go on a tourist trip is going to be the worst place on earth.

The only exception would be if you happen to be right in a terrorist attack, which can happen anywhere nowadays.

P_M Apr 2nd, 2004 09:46 AM

Since it's all a matter of opinion, it's really impossible to learn from others what's the best or worst place on earth. As you have seen from this thread, people have completely different views on Paris, and I'm sure the same is true for many other places. I went with a group to Morocco recently, and at the end of the tour about half the people in our group would have said Morocco is the worst place on earth, while the other half loved it. Wherever you go, you must go with an open mind and an open heart. By doing this, you might never visit a place that you consider the "worst" in the world.

Patty Apr 2nd, 2004 09:47 AM

Las Vegas

pdxgirl Apr 2nd, 2004 09:48 AM

This is the Europe board. The worst place on earth is not in Europe.

mr_go Apr 2nd, 2004 09:57 AM

The slums of Sao Paulo or Calcutta? Not that I've ever been...

Worst place I've been to in Europe? That's hard to say. Probably Dublin. Not a bad place, mind you, but a week there is about 5 days too many.

dcespedes Apr 2nd, 2004 11:10 AM

To Rex: Our sincere thanks and appreciation go out to all the members of the 82nd Airborne! Welcome home!!

Russ Apr 2nd, 2004 11:11 AM

Sorry to offend all the Paris lovers here. Lev's question is a bit ambiguous. To clarify... Paris for me is not the "worst place on earth." I was responding really to the "not friendly" part of his post. For me, it is the least friendly place I have ever been (I've been there on 4 separate occasions.) But then I have not traveled outside the US, Mexico, Canada, and Europe, and that's just my personal experience - which is what I thought Lev was asking for.

The worst place on earth I've ever laid eyes on? I really do hate L.A.

uhoh_busted Apr 2nd, 2004 12:06 PM

Yep I'll salute the 82nd Airborne guys, too. My son (1st Marines) is currently in Ramadi (same general area) on his second tour of duty in Iraq. Last year, once all the fighting was over, he was based just overlooking Babylon. He said that it was an very interesting part of the world, and Babylon and Ur would be wonderful destinations someday. He doesn't have much to say for where he is now, but based on the news I'd agree that Fallujah is probably one of the worst places on earth at present.

rex Apr 2nd, 2004 02:52 PM

I'm very happy to acknowledge your kind words to Matt and his buddies, even if I have hijacked this thea a little bit.

On the original question, I guess I actually agree with <<Perhaps it is better to not respond to such threads in the future.>>

It is odd that destination-bashing is so popular here. About the same time as the aforementioned "I'll never come back here!", there was also a thread - - http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34470857 - - called "I will ALWAYS come back here."

It fizzled out at 28 responses.

There's a huge stretch of desert between Tucson, Arizona and Las Crucias, New Mexico that could easily be voted, "Worst Place On Earth".

Blessing to the 82nd Airborne and welcome home. Whether or not I agree with this war I'm very grateful to the those who have chosen to stand up for the USA. My prayers are always with you.
