lyb- I was in Bath in March. I chose to stay at Lucknam Park which is a short drive from Bath. I had narrowed it down to a few hotels in the area, but settled on Lucknam because it offered horseback riding and I thought I might go. (Turns out, I was sick when I was there, so I limited my activity to sightseeing in Bath).
While I was there, I had lunch one day at the Bath Priory and asked to see some bed rooms. The decor in the dining room is a little tired and busy for my taste (with paintings covering every square inch) but the food was very good. The rooms I viewed had been recently refurbished and are impeccable. The property features a respectable garden and fine facilities.
The Bath Priory is located quite far from downtown... I am not sure it would be (reasonably) walkable. The parking at the hotel is very tight and the gates into the property are somewhat difficult to negotiate with the narrow street.
At Lucknam Park, I was in room 44 (Columbine). It was a good sized room (aprox 20.5 feet by 16 feet) and though on closer inspection had new carpeting etc., still seemed tired... (the colour perhaps?) Though in relatively fine condition, I wouldn't call the room impeccable... the bathroom especially with peeling wallpaper etc. could use an update. The bed was not uncomfortable, but when I pulled the sheets back the mattress was quite old.
There were some nice details in the room...
-a dvd player (about 30 dvds available at reception (complimentary))
-a Bose cd player
-fruit
-chocolates (these might have been there because I booked through Andrew Harper...)
-flowers
-'real' magazines (by that I mean those I would buy myself... not just the hotel's in house magazine or the one the local tourism board puts out)
The property is quite beautiful, but I was disappointed in the gym. Quite small with abysmal circulation.
One night I ate in the dining room which was good, not exceptional (for most of my meal I was the only one there). The adjoining room had some sort of conference going on which was very loud... not good.
The second night, since I was really not feeling well, I ordered room service. Again, fine, but not exceptional.
Over all, though Lucknam Park wasn't bad, I wouldn't necessarily recommend it. (It certainly didn't rank in my top three country inns on that trip.) If I go back I will definitely try the Bath Priory.
(On a side note, I have heard other negative comments about the state of the Royal Crescent, so it would not be a place I would consider staying)
