World`s largest car ferry

The name is Ulysses and is 50,000 tons.It travels twice daily from Dublin to Holyhead in North Wales. It can carry 2,000 passengers and has three miles of car parking. It cost $85,000,000 and after one year in service it has missed no sailing.I found out about it on www.irishferries.ie and hope to travel on it some day.Has anybody on Fodor`s done the trip?

If you like large car ferries, try Silja Line's Symphony or Serenade linking Stockholm and Helsinki in the Baltic. They are even largen than Ulysses (58,000 tons, 2,700 passengers, 400 cars) or Silja's Europa doing the Stockholm-Turku run (60,000 tons, 3,000 passengers, 400 cars). Their restaurants and on board entertainment are unbelievable.

Enjoy

Phil.

We did the big one from Stockholm to Turku without a car ourselves. While I don't like cruises, this was a fun way to get to Finland. The ship is huge, sort of a floating city, and was really pretty grand -- not at all what I expected a ferry to be like.

Those ferries have linked Sweden and Finland since 1950´s. They were not bad even in the 1960´s and 1970´s, but like Phil said, nowadays they are more like floating cities or floating hotels. There are two ferry companies, Silja and Viking, Silja´s boats are a bit more elegant, Viking´s boats more like all night party boats. Silja´s boats have great restaurants and also shopping is better than on Viking.

And, if you ever travel to Helsinki with one of those ferries: Be sure to enjoy your arrival from the front of the ship on deck 12 (on Silja line).

Helsink's ferry harbour is in the very centre of the city and the view on arrival is simply fantastic.

Phil.
