I have walked for miles in London, Paris, Rome and all over the USA in my Dansko clogs. Friends who have jobs where they are on there feet (nurses, hairdressers, teachers) all day also swear by them!

Is May really too early for sandals?

I don't know about everybody else, but I am on a perennial quest to find the perfect traveling shoes-- something sexy, with a heel, goes with everything, and is great for walking miles and miles over cobblestones.

I'm afraid it's an oxymoron, but that doesn't stop me from keeping on looking!

As others have asked: end of April/early May too early for sandals?

No, if it's warm enough to wear sandals, do. It's very warm here in Belgium today for the time of year (over 20 celsius, sunny) and some sandals are out already I've noticed. And its only March 31.

Its funny because I never think of the old don't wear white or sandals befor memorial day anymore over here. I wear what the weather permits.

If its hot I wear sandals....some are pretty and some are funky and comfy. Last May I was in Italy wearing sandals the whole time. Go with the temperatures and whats comfortable.

Thanks for the responses. I will be in Paris the second week of May and hopefully be wearing my sandals in the warm spring sunshine!

Humanone: have you worn the cloth lace-ups for mega-walking? (Cloth may rub more than leather.) I wore maroon Converse from 1976-77 for JV basketball; every team in our conference wore the dominant color from their school. Was thankful for leather Adidas in 1978!

Back to our story -- wear what matches and feels comfortable. Attitude! Attitude! Attitude!

If you're going to walk and you want to enjoy yourself, wear comfortable shoes. My husband is a kamakaze walker (10-12 miles a day) so I wear Birkenstock walking shoes. In the summer I switch to Birkenstock sandals. My feet are happy and I am happy.

You will see many many natives wearing all kinds of tennis, running, walking, athletic shoes. They are very popular . . . as are jeans.

Whatever shoes you take, be sure they are well broken in before you go. Wear them for a nice loooooooooong walk and see if they are comfortable. A competent shoe repair person can fix many problems.

Be comfortable and you will enjoy your vacation so much more.
