Withdrawal limits in Italy

It had been mentioned a few times that daily withdrawal limits in Italy are much lower than in the US.

Let's say that average daily limit here is about $500.00. What is it in Italy?

Thanks,

Brian.

Might be 200 or 250 euros (I haven't been back to Europe since Jan 1). But that wouldn't be unusual in the US either, would it? Or maybe there are two different questions - - daily limit? or limit for each time you use the ATM?

I'd be interested to hear what others recall.

In any event, who wants/needs cash so much? Or do you need to "play bank" for a family/group? More than one card or account might be the answer.

Best wishes,

Rex
HA HA HA HA

when I first read the title, I thought it meant you were going into withdrawal on Italy and had reached your limits (and you had to go back or you'd jurt yourself or somesuch nonsense).

getting the DTs for Italy, I can see it now..

:-)

You could always use your Amex card (at the American Express office of course) as a second option.

I always thought there was no such thing as a cash advance against an American Express card. But American Express WILL cash your personal check, for cardholders. Limits vary, I am guessing, according to how long you have been a carholder, and your credit history with the company.

But I think you do have to have checks with you.
Your daily limit is set by your bank; however, each ATM machine may have it's own limit. The most common limits I have found have been L500,000 and L1,000,000 (about $250 & $500)I have not been to Italy this year. When the machine refuses a transaction for a L1,000,000 I just try again for L500,000 , almost always sucessful. Be aware the machine will not always tell you the reason why the transaction failed so just try again at a lower amount.

The maximum is 240 euros each time. But you can use your card at least twice in a 24-hour period. So, theoretically you can get 480 euros a day.

The individual ATM may have a limit - but your home bank also determines how much you can withdraw and how often.

I used to have a $300 24 hour limit (standard for my bank) but when I am heading overseas I often have them raise my limit to $500. Not that I normally need that much cash - but if I am paying cash for a flat or villa I'd like to withdraw it all at once instead of going back 2 or 3 times.

Rex, re Amex ATM cash withdrawal.
I don't know about US, but with Amex Europe, if you want to use their ATM facility, you have to register your bank's current (checking) account details with them. They will then issue a PIN code to use with your Amex card, and when you withdraw cash, it will be debited from your bank account. In other words, your Amex card becomes another ATM card for your particular bank account.

Alec, it is the same in the US. I can withdraw cash with my AX card from my bank account. I can also use my AX Optima card (now called just a credit card) to withdraw on my credit line. You don't need checks. I just realized my bank had a low limit on my new ATM card. I couldn't get $500. I called and they explained that it had a limit on it that I was not aware of. I had them raise it to $500 without a problem.
