Wireless cards in Paris
 

Can you buy a wireless card in paris to be used for the 10 days we're there? How much will it be?

What specifically do you mean by a wireless card?

What's a wireless card? You can hook up to many local wireless hotspots, but I don't know about a card.

You don't need a specific card...
if your laptop does not have wireless built in there IS a card you slide in but you're better off getting something like that before you leave.

In Paris and Amsterdam last summer I never had a problem connecting wirelessly... WIFI is pretty much the same everywhere.

If you do a search with http://www.jiwire.com/ you'll find
over 4,800 wireless hotspots in the
Ile de France.

If anyone can clarify I would be grateful - I will have a laptop that is wireless enabled but do I need to by say a prepaid charge for local internet providers in europe - mainly france - or will the asutralian isp that i use be OK?

If wireless means WIFI, I have taken a laptop with WIFI enabled. The WIFI I used worked by pay-as-you-go basis provided by some local ISP franchises. At these places, I bought so many minutes or days worth of WIFI time. I would get an authorization code usable at that franchise only.

I have not used cellular based internet like ATT's Laptopconnect card in France.

A wifi enabled laptop will be able to connect to any free networks. There are many places where you can turn on your laptop and you will have a multitude of options, most will be professionally provided free, some you will be able to leech on as they are open networks....Too easy. Just sit down, turn your laptop on and search for available networks.

My Asus EEE has built in wifi. In Paris in December I would stop for a coffee or a beer every few hours. I only stopped where free wifi was advertized. It usually worked.

If you're talking about a SIM card for a cell phone, you can get one for less than 10€.

Your Australian ISP will definitely NOT work in France. In addition to the spots mentioned above apparently every McDonalds in Paris has WiFi. The city of Paris also has free WIFI available in many parks and libraries.
