Winter in Malaga, Cordoba & Madrid? Rain worries?

I am planning a trip to Malaga, Cordoba and Madrid the 1st week of Jan. Read the weather report and understood that Spain has Mediterranean weather, which means the most rain will happen in Dec-Jan.

Is rain a big issue traveling during early Jan in those cities? Will it be like Seattle/Vancouver where folks pretty much will expect rain everyday and no sunshine?

I don't mind the cold but rain certainly gives me worry.

Love to hear thoughts to confirm the reality either way.

Thanks much!!

Statistics for the first week of January in Málaga based on the past 14 years: Highs between 15 and 19°C (60-65°F) and night lows between 6 and 12°C. 6 hours sun pr. day and to days with rainfall.

For Córdoba: Highs between 13°C and 17°C, lows between 2°C and 9°C. 4 hours sun pr. day.

For Madrid: Highs between 8 and 13°C, lows between -1°C and 6°C. 4 hours sun pr. day and two days with rainfall.

Weather is going to be variable that is for sure.
Last year Malaga was reported to have had the greatest amount of rain than anywhere else in Spain...hopefully that was and odd year to throw the statistics out!

But let me warn you.. when it rains here lately .. it really rains! None of this light misty sprinkling!

Thanks all. I think I'll try November instead to avoid the rain season. Fingers crossed:)

No more rain season in Dec/Jan than in Nov. Last year was extreme, and most probably you'll be positively surprised. Not at all uncommon to have 60-65F and sunshine in Málaga in January.

I was in Spain in both November '09 and January '10 and on both trips the weather was variable, there's no telling. Although I'm certainly no expert on Spanish weather patterns, but I do remember they were having an unusual amount of rain that season, like kimhe says.

On my November trip for example, one day in Sevilla it was glorious sunshine (what a lovely introduction to that amazing city!), the next day in Cordoba it poured, non-stop, the entire day. But I didn't mind, I just used it as an excuse to linger for hours inside the Mezquita.
