Winery tours from Paris
OK, don't crucify me...I can't get my search "thingy" to work...

Am staying in the Latin Quarter and would like to tour a winery or two while in Paris. Any tour buses or shuttles I could look into or call for reservations? We could go by train if we had a destination. Don't want to rent a car, being the "wino" I am, I'm sure the French would appreciate that courtesy.

Merci!

Oops! Forgot to mention, will be there the last week of January.

Ciao!

Stretching the idea of "wine" a bit, I think the most interesting would be to go to Reims and Epernay, both doable in one day by train for tours of some of the top champagne cellars, and you can have a wonderful lunch in either town. The Moet tour in Epernay is particularly nice. The stop in Reims can include a quick visit to the spectacular cathedral as well as a champagne cellar or two. Burgundy and Bordeaux are a little too far to make a day trip out of, and we didn't find the Loire valley to be very tourist oriented in terms of wineries.

Patrick, I don't think it is a "stretch" to consider a trip to Reims and/or Epernay a "winery" trip. Champagne IS wine, of course, and day tripping to this area is probably the single most popular destination in search of "zee good stuff" - - whether bubbly or not.

And Bonnie, please see the thread "Tours or Bordeaux - which is preferred day trip from Paris?" which I am topping, simultaneous to this message.

Thanks guys. The thread really helped.

I guess I should have been more specific. We would be open to overnight trips outside (or inside for that matter) of Paris. I'm going to check out the Moet Cellars tour as you suggested. Thanks again!

Bonnie
Within Paris, there is only one tiny vineyard, in Montmartre, and their wine festival around the harvest
(vendage) is in the first weekend of October. The vineyard is on charming rue St Vincent I think.
Reims's champagne caves can be done as a daytrip or an overnighter of course.
www.ville-reims.com
For train service, go to :
http://voyages.sncf.fr/

The champagne caves are spread out. Rent a car or take a cab or bus. The tour of the Taittinger caves includes a tasting and a gift shop. At Veuve Cliquot you need to make a reservation for the tour, but you'd have to check the winter schedule to make sure it is offered. Pommery is a beautiful building with a great view of the cathedral. Some caves require advance reservations and some not, so it is best to check.

Across the street from Pommery is Le Crayeres, an expensive, gorgeous, 3 Michelin star restaurant and inn. Phone 3 26 82 80 80, closed Mondays and Tuesday lunch. If you plan to lunch, dine, or stay over at Les Crayeres, they will make an appointment for a private tour at Pommery. Les Crayeres was the home of Madame Pommery. Pommery and les Crayeres are at the outskirts of town.
