Wineries in/near Montepulciano
 

My husband & I will be going to Tuscany in May for 5 days based in Montepulciano. I would love help on best wineries to visit. I know you generally need to make a reservation for tour/tastings, some free to taste while others charge up to 20 euro. Looking for places where wine prices aren't real expensive (max 30 euro), have nice tour and great food for lunch or dinner. Will have car but don't want to venture off too far if we've been drinking. Avignonesi was recommended - although sounds like great experience and amazing food wines appear to be very pricey @ 95 euro and up from what I read. Is that true for this place? There are also a few Cantina's right in town that we will definitely take advantage of (Contucci Cantina, Cantine de’Ricci, Cantina Gattavecchi). Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Poliziano has a very nice presentation and Boscarelli is local and very good. These are both near Montepulciano and if you intend to try brunellos, you will want to head west to Montalcino with many options.

We are in Montepulciano now and had a great cooking Lesson, wine tasting and dinner at Palazzo Vecchio. It was our favourite wine over the past week. I think they do lunch.

Avoid Pulciano (think that’s right...you will see them all over the tourist spots. It’s the wine with the face on it).

We also like Tolosa, but they don’t do food.

I did see some bad reviews on Pulcino. Will avoid that one, thanks for confirming. We do plan to visit Montalcino. Any ideas on best wine place there? Thanks for the info to date.

We went to Avignonesi for their tour and wine pairing lunch a few years ago. Yes, it was expensive buts hands down it was the highlight of our trip. The food, the wine, the scenery and the service were phenomenal! You have your lunch on a terrace overlooking the vineyard. It is a relaxed affair, with gourmet food. It’s a bit of a drive from Montelpulciano but that was fun too. Passed many sunflower fields. Enjoy your trip. It is a beautiful area.

Not a winery, but in Montalcino Enoteca Osticcio has fabulous views of the countryside and you can do some wine tasting (flights) there and you can order food.

You can also taste at the Fortezza (hopefully in the courtyard if good weather), but there are no views.

FWIW - I much prefer the Brunellos over the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano (or at least the ones I tasted).

Thank you for the additional input. Will definitely look into these options. I have read/heard that the Brunello is better than the Vino Nobile so we'll be sure to taste both before we buy/ship home. So looking forward to it! Grazie!!

Do your research on Montalcino wineries and brunellos on their website www.consorziobrunellodimontalcino.it I totally agree with the Fortezza experience--excellent selection, knowledgable staff and good food if you desire.
Visits to wineries is best done with a call ahead or a reservation as most of these places are family run.
