Wineries in ireland?
Ok, hope I don't get made fun of for this post hehehe
But my husband and I are known to enjoy quite a bit of drinking on our trips (what better way to relax) and I think we'd like to switch from beer to wine one night of our trip. Do any wineries exist in Ireland as I'm told the first wineries ever started in England... please advise? |
The Oxford Companion to Wine has the following in its very short piece on Ireland: "Ireland, country with several small vineyards (not disimilar to those of England)."

Have not run across a winery in Ireland but have had a couple of of good bottles from all over. If you get to Kinsale visit the Kinsale Brewery which is new in the last three years, great lager and ale made fresh. If you do find a winery please let the rest of know. Have fun.

Hi Shamrock,
years ago, when I was living in Ireland, I remember that there were a couple of small wineries in the Southwest, mostly family business, and very, very small. Itīs not only a climate problem, but also the soil wasnīt really good for wine. The only one I have found mentioned in the internet is the Bunratty Mead Winery, near Bunratty Castle, but it doesnīt look like the real thing to me ;) You might find the following sites interesting : http://www.wrathofgrapes.com/ http://www.winegeese.ie/ Rgds, Cova |
JOHNOD: Thanks for the mention of the Kinsale brewery. Next time I'm in the area, I will sit down to a pint or two. The Biddy Early brewery in tiny Inagh, Co. Clare has a couple of fine brews and is certainly worth a stop if passing nearby.
There is always, of course, Irish whiskey .... Bill |
Wojazz I'll be in Kinsale the last Monday and Tuesday in June and my first stop will be the brewery. The Lager is also available in many Pubs in Kinsale and the S/W. Not spending anytime in Clare this year but will keep the Biddy Early (great name) in mind for the future.

This is a country known for Guinness and whiskey; and you want to know about its wine? There is a reson it's not known for wine, you know! |
