Wine tastings in Northern Italy
 

We will be staying just outside Milan in early September for a week. Does anyone know of vinyards that grow their own and do wine tastings(opposed to wine stores) within 1 1/2 - 2 hr drive that do lunch or other food options. We are not too worried whether it is red or white wine as long as it is decent quality and not vinegar.

Unfortunately, there are no vineyards near Milano.

One option is driving to the Asti region. It is a 1:30 drive to Scurzolenge, where you find Cantina Sant'Agata which produces excellent Barbera d'Asti red wines.

Another option is to drive to Lago di Garda. The drive to Sirmione is 1:40.

There you find excellent white wines called Lugana and red wines called Valpolicella or Amarone. I recommend Zenato:

You will find in both area a lot of wineries. These two are just the ones I have personally visited.

There are certainly vinyards "within a 1/2 - 2 hr drive" of Milano! There are some less than an hour away (near Pavia, which is where Pavese wines come from!) I'm especially fond of wines from Novara, which is only 20 minutes from Malpensa (Pavese wines are only about 40 minutes from Linate).

Anyway, whether or not they do lunch, I don't know. But here's a lotta websites:

You're unlikely to get vinegar (unless you drive to Modena!) but you would probably do well to do a little research into whether you would like a Bardolina (Lago di Garda), Amarone (Veneto) or some of the Piemontese wines mentioned above.

The Franciacorta wine region is about an hour for Milan and produces some of Italy's best sparkling whites. Here is a link to an overview of the region
