Wine tasting in Germany with a trip down the Rhine?
I just moved to Germany and my parents are coming to visit for a month. Needing a bit of help on 'the sightseeing list' from mom.
She is dying to go on a trip down the Rhine (round trip from Koln or Dysseldorf). And I was hoping to combine that a wine tasting. stay somewhere overnight but not too far from Koln or Dysseldorf. Any comments, thoughts will be greatly appreciated! Thanks! |
kimberle888- the really great vineyards on the Rhine start at Boppard just south of Koblenz as well as the most spectacular scenery in the Rhine Gorge. In Boppard I can suggest Weingut August & Walter Perll. Farther south in Bacharach the following vineyards are highly recommended: Toni Just, Randolph Kauer, Fritz Bastian, Ratzenberger, Mades, and Lanius-Knab. Weingut Fritz Bastian has a wine bar that is open every day except Thursday - the other require an appointment. A lot of vineyards will be open on Saturday for tasting. If your parents really enjoy good wine I suggest you or they obtain a copy of "Touring in Wine Country - The Mosel and Rheingau" a travel guide edited by Hugh Johnson. Have your folks sip a few "spatleses" for me!

Hi,
I don't know whether you have checked this site yet: http://www.k-d.com/engl/index.html It's the major Rhine ship line in Cologne/Duesseldorf. For one thing they have all kinds of tours (castle tour, Loreley tour, whine tour). But you could also take the "normal" ship on the Rhine to Koblenz and stay overnight there. Here's the schedule http://www.k-d.com/schiffstouren/fah...uptsaison.html Or go to Koblenz by train/car and then on the Mosel http://www.k-d.com/schiffstouren/fahrplan_mosel.html There's even a historic paddle steamer (called Goethe). I don't know how old your parents are but passengers over 60 pay half on all the tours on Mondays and Fridays. And if you go to the starting oint by train you also get 20 percent off. |
Thanks! First time fodorer. All your help has been very appreciated.

Schloss Johannesberg is a stunning winery and has excellent food as well with a view from the dining room across the vineyards to the river that is just wonderful. One classy joint and they make darn good wine too.
