Wine in Checked Luggage
 

Does anyone have any tips for bringing back wine or olive oil from Italy in checked luggage?

It's actually a tradition of mine to bring back a local alcohol from every trip to Europe I've been on but I've always had carry-on luggage for that.

I normally pack some large plastic bags when I go and then put my wine in them, then just pack them well between my clothes. I've never had any problems. Good Luck!

Ira, you are brilliant. I wrapped all my clothes around the bottle and worried all the way home that the bottle would break and stain every item of clothes in my bag.

We do the same as you Jen. My husband has this large collection of liquers from all over the world. We have just bought a new large cabinet so they can be displayed for dinner guests to select their after dinner drink.
I'm the one who has to dust the bottles!
We always wrap up the bottles in our clothes in the suitcase and on return from Moscow discovered a lot of broken glass and messy clothes! At least it was vodka and not some red coloured liquer!

I recently came back from Paris and brought one bottle of wine back. Wrapping your bottle of wine in clothing is a natural option if you don't have bubble wrap. In my case, when we'd checked in to our hotel, there weren't any bath towels in our bathroom (which was a bit strange). Before we ventured out, my sister mentioned this to the desk person. To be on the safe side, we stopped in at the Monoprix and we each bought a bath towel (and a set of washclothes as well). The towel came in handy for wrapping the bottle of wine I bought.

In France, the post offices sell special padded boxes to send bottles (they are available in some large supermarkets too)
I would suppose this type of boxes are available in Italy too
They aren't very big and are very light

We always bring bubble wrap and large plastic bags. This no liquid on the plane thing tho is really cramping our wine bringing home!!! We used to bring home at least a case from Burgundy in a 21 inch roll aboard carry on. Oh well, we'll have to be more judicious now. Bummer

I have not done this for only a couple bottles, but wrap in a plastic grocery type bag then roll in clothes and put in suitcase. Have not had a mishap yet.

For 30 years my husband has been putting bottles of wine in his extra socks, before putting them into his checked bag... for their journey home!!

This month i brought home 6 bottles of wine from France in my checked luggage, I wrapped them in t-shirts and a sweater. Not one drop lost! :)

It's fun to bring back things like this from your travels....but rather than worry about breakage/leakage why not buy the wines and olive oils here in U.S.? One can often get the same thing, almost for less.
