Munich hotels
Hello,
We are traveling to Munich for a week in late July. I am looking for a lovely hotel that is not so impersonal/large as some of the big name ones such as Meredien or Sofitel. Four star prices is what I thought I had to pay. Any ideas?

You might like the Uhland Hotel. It is not that fancy but definately not a cookie-cutter chain experience. It is an old converted mansion near the Oktoberfest grounds, about a 10 minute walk to the train station. It is comfortable with a very friendly staff that you will enjoy. http://www.hotel-uhland.de

We stayed at the Mandarin Oriental in Munich a couple years ago. It's in a really good location in the center of everything. The Hofbrauhaus was just around the corner. The service and decor at this hotel was outstanding.
One thing to consider traveling in July is you will want a hotel with A/C. Not all hotels have it. At any rate, if the rates don't scare you away, you will enjoy this hotel:

Have fun!

Hi Dave
We really liked Le Meridien, got a great deal and a room upgrade even with my first stay. Huge room.
The Sofitel looks nice, in the lobby, anyway...that's all I've seen of it. But I think it's got a good reputation.
I considered both these places because I wanted to be close to the train station. About a minute walk. Very convenient for that.

We stayed at the Platzl in Dec 2006 and enjoyed it. Lovely hotel, and a great location.
It was getting ready to be refurbished when we were there, which was a good thing since the rooms were a little "worn" but we still liked it.
