Windsor questions
We are going to Windsor for the day from London. Does anyone have a preference as to what train station to go into, Windsor Central Station or Windsor & Eaton Riverside Station, We are planning on going to the castle and just looking at the map they look about the same distance. We would be leaving from the Waterloo station.
Also, any "must do's" while we are in Windsor, besides the castle? Thanks in advance. |
If you are leaving from Waterloo, you will end up at Windsor & Eton Riverside station. It is a direct train w/o changes.
(If you wanted Windsor Central - you'd take the train from Paddington and change at Slough) Central is a bit closer to the Castle entrance - but Windsor and Eton Riverside is still walkable from the castle. The Castle is really the only "must" but you can also have a nice meal, a bit of shopping, walk across the river to Eton. |
Windsor castle itself can easily take up more than half a day. After that, like janis said, you can do some shopping, and visit Eton College. I've read here before that Eton College offers walking tours, but you'd have to check their website to see if that's still true.

We enjoyed walking around the town and Eton in addition to seeing the castle.

Years ago, we lived as expats not far from Windsor in Beaconsfield. It was one of my favorite day trips. Nice shops AND they had a KFC and Baskin Robbins! Big deal for those of us who missed our fried chicken and ice cream! Now if they'd only had an authentic Mexican Restaurant...

Lots of Mexican joints around there now, at least one in Windsor and more in Slough, Reading, etc. Can not vouch for their "goodness" though!
