Windsor lodging recommendations
 

Hello. Can anyone recommend a hotel in Windsor, within walking distance to (or not far from) shops, pubs, restaurants, cobblestone streets, the castle, etc. I'm looking for something very charming for our last two nights in the UK. HOWEVER, the budget only will allow a max of $200 per night. Any suggestions?

The last 3 times we've been in Windsor (in mid to late May each time) we have just gone to the Tourist Info office on the high street, and asked what they've got for around £100 for 2 people. Every time we have been given the option of The Castle Hotel which we've always taken. The last time that rate did not include breakfast, but the other times it did. This is the lovely big fancy hotel on the high street, right across from the castle - pubs and the main shops are steps away. The rack rate is far above £100, so IMO it's a great deal, although chances are you will end up in one of the newer, annex rooms at the back, so perhaps not as charming as the main part of the hotel, but for location, decor and hotel atmosphere we think it's great. And you can have a lovely afternoon tea in the lobby.

At any rate, checking with the TI office on the day will likely yield a number of good suggestions, if you don't mind not having something reserved in advance of your arrival... but that might depend on the time of year.

Virtually anything IN Windsor would be w/i walking distance of everything since central Windsor is a very small place.

the Castle that taggie mentions is good -- but since this for the last nights of your trip. I'd just wait until I was in the UK and use any TIC (Tourist Info Center) in any town to book you a place ahead in Windsor. Then if you decide to, you can change your itinerary along the way. Maybe you'll end up only wanting one night - or even none - in Windsor.

My memory fails me, because we were there a few years ago. But for character and ambience, right on the Thames, the Christopher Wren's House is tough to beat. Like most British hotels of older vintage, it has no A/C. But afternoon tea is a delightful experience, on the patio overlooking the Thames. And the restaurant is quite good. Good luck.

It's taken me a while to get back to this one, but I'm still working on it. I didn't even remember that I had made this post until Rex reminded me in another post today.

Anyhow, the issue with waiting to reserve & booking once we arrive in Windsor is that we are arriving on June 7th - when, I believe, school is out. I really, REALLY don't want to risk not having a room on our last two nights, or, having to pay a lot more than we want to pay.
