Windsor for a day

Thanks to a recommendation on this board, we are planning to visit Windsor on a layover of 12 hrs. in Heathrow.

We will probably be able to enjoy 6-7 hrs. in Windsor.

Are there any "must-see" attractions? a shop, restaurant, place along the river?

What is the best way to get from and back to the airport?

Thanks so much!

Well, at the risk of stating the obvious - - the castle.

And yes, there is a great little "main" street shopping area. You'll have no trouble finding it.

Sorry I don't know the transport question, but I would think that it's an easy one.

Best wishes,

Rex
There are buses that go from Heathrow to Windsor, but a taxi is probably your best bet, given your time constraints.

In addition to Windsor Castle, there is a branch of the Royal Mews (the Queen's stables and motorpool) that you can visit nearby. A stroll along the Long Walk, through the Great Winsor Park is a good way to shake off jet lag, if the weather is good.

Another good walk is down to the River Thames, across the pedestrian bridge, and into the little town of Eton. There are a few shops, pubs, etc here as well as the famous boys school.

Suggestion for tea: the Orangarie restaurant in the Sir Christopher Wren's House hotel. It is on the Windsor side of the bridge, right on the riverside.

Enjoy your short visit.

David White
http://www.KidsToLondon.com

There's a lovely arts and crafts market in the old central railway station.

I spent a day at Windsor a week ago and had a very pleasant and delicious lunch at a little Italian restaurant called Castello
at 4 Church Street - very near the exit from the castle grounds. Enjoy!
