ckneb...haven't checked the chateaux, but May 1 is much like Dec. 25th over here, as in even the museums close, even Versailles.
indytravel....The May 1st weekend happens to be the last weekend of school holidays for about 1/3 of the country, as well as the first weekend of school holidays for another third.

oops, hit post too quickly.
Given that most families will have just been on holiday, I doubt many businesses will be closing for the "ponts".
The regions on holidays the first week of May are Versailles, Paris, Bordeaux and Creteil.
I have been hearing that we can all look forward to a healthy share of strikes and manifs this May, so get ready for adventure!

Phread, when you say May 1 is like Dec. 25 "over here", do you mean in France?
