Will my cell phone work?
I have a nokia phone with the AT&T one rate plan.... will it work for calling home from Italy?
|
European cell phones use a different system than the US uses (for transmission), so your phone won't work there. You could rentone though.

Dawn,
Go to the AT&T website at:http://www.attws.com/business/travel/cellcard
You can call the states from Europe with the use of a Cellcard which costs $49/yr. You must have the right phone and it is only available to AT&T cell phone customers. You may also want to call them and speak to one of their reps for greater detail.

Thanks for all the info on the phone!
I called AT&T and the women said she made some changes to my service and now it will work.... I am still skeptical?

You should still be skeptical. In order to use a phone there you need a GSM capable phone that allows two BAM's plus a GSM chip that AT&T has enabled for you. Only the latest Nokia sold in the US is going to do that for you. What they generally do for this is program a chip with your US number in it and place it in a phone you rent in Europe. That give you your regular number that the US can call, but you temporarily use a different phone. Know what the costs are before you do this.
