Will live in Germany for 2 years

I'm moving to Germany (from Houston, TX USA) for 2 year (temp. job transfer). I will live in the Frankfort/Weisbaden area - any suggestions? I'm single so would like to live near the city but not directly in (am now looking for a flat). Also, is there any "American Clubs" that Ex-pats join for social activities? Any information on this transition would be appreciated.
Doug, you lucky dog. First, will you be working in Frankfurt or Weisbaden? If Frankfurt, then I would explore Saschenhausen across the river. A lot going on there. If Weisbaden, there are some really nice areas in town. When I was in Frankfurt I lived for a while in a small suburd calles Moefelden an easy trian ride and then moved to Saschenhousen until I started working in Weisbaden.
Hello Dough,
I live near Frankfurt and work there. Of course there are Clubs for Americans. I`ve worked in Bad Homburg, which is closeby and a lot of Executives from abroad live there. You`ll find everything from International Schools to American choirs and socializing activities aimed to Americans. That comes from the fact that Frankfurt is-besides London-Europe`s banking capital and a big business spot in general.
I would advise to look for a place in the Taunus region, very pretty and international when it comes to the people living there. If you tell me exactly where your employer is located I`ll be able to give you more specific advice.

Best wishes
Miriam

If you like to walk, i would sugggest that you check out 'volksmarching'. These are organized, non-competitive walks that have hundreds to thousands of participants each weekend. I'm sure there is at least one american club in the frankfurt area.

Doug, I worked for a defense contractor, working in Frankfurt (Hausen) and living in Morefelden-Walldorf for just about three years. It was great.

I would look for a place in either Walldorf or Morefelden (two towns which are essentially joined together). There is a large number of Americans in this area and many Germans know a good amount of English. I lived with the Habnitz family (top floor apartment) at Burgermeister-Klingler Str. #13 in Morefelden.

I belonged to the American Legion club in Walldorf, just off the main street. We stayed at the Walldorf hotel and found the apartment through a realtor in less than two weeks. We'd meet at the Legion.

The area is well-situated. You can easily get into Sachsenhausen on B43/44 or into Frankfurt on autobahn A5. I could make it to work in 15 minutes. You also have great access to the Middle Rhine region for afternoon drives, Heidelburg is close and Rothenburg is 1 1/2 hours away. Frankfurt airport is just 10 minutes away.

Best of luck.
