will ferry prices go up closer to the date of departure?

Ferry companies urge one to buy tickets well in advance because, so they threaten, 'prices will go up' later in the year. Is this true? [It didn';t used to be but perhaps things have changed...] I would be very glad to hear from folk who have experience with the slow ferries
And should I at least pre-buy the journey on 4 May from Milos to Sifnos in case it's full up? [Easter Saturday after all! Sadly it's a Seajet]
many thanks to all for your advice!
And an afterthought: I wonder if there is a ferry app that has a filter to allow me to filter out the fast Seajet boats ?

It probably is true, as plane tickets and train tickets tend to go up in the days before travel. I would buy in advance in case it sells out. Europe is a lot more crowded in this post covid world.

I does not surprise me that ferries are packed for Greece over Easter weekend as it backs against two major holidays: May 1st Labor Day and May 5th Easter. Probably why you may be seeing both higher prices and limited bookings.

Hadn’t heard that prices rise closer to travel, except that a class of travel/ticket may possibly sell out.

We didn’t buy any in advance last year but have purchased tickets for popular routes over Easter because it will be a busy time of year. Of course not sure whether this is necessary.

The public holiday in Greece has moved from 1st May to 7th May due to 1st May falling in Holy Week.

Ferry fares are fixed by Government.
Tickets are sold as long as the ferry is not full.
There are discounts for early bookers, stundents, soldiers, etc, however
