Will be in Edinburgh 8/11-8/13..
 

I have already booked accommodation so that is fortunate. I do know that there all kindsof thngs going on in August in Edinburgh. I will be attending the tattoo for the first time. This is my second trip to Edinburgh and love the place and do hope one day to live there for good. Anyway are there streets festivals and things for free that we can do or view?

Go to a Ceilidh!! They are not free, but cheap. There is a club that holds a Ceilidh in Edinburgh every Thursday as well as others. I guarantee you will have fun and it is an authentic Scottish experience.

If you haven't been to Sandy Bell's pub, you may want to put it on your list. Nightly (after 9 on weekdays and after 4 on weekends) the pub is visited by local musicians for jam sessions and you will enjoy good traditional music for the price of a pint.

There are lots of free events at the Festival Fringe, and there are even more that are very inexpensive. When I was there with my family we stumbled across a bar that had continuous free stand-up comedy acts throughout the day. There are street performers, and there are people handing out flyers for their performances all over town. August in Edinburgh is extremely stimulating.

I just learned a new word and looked it up. it sounds super. The flat I have rented is in good location - within walking distance of castle..It all sound good and especially having a pint. Being a Brit and living in US for 25 years still miss pubs.. Thanks this will definitely be something we do. What is the club you refer to? thanks...

Every day there is a hut (last year it was by the Scottish Galleries on Princes Street) which sells half price tickets for Fringe events later that day

Also for the past couple of years there has been a specific free fringe for which brochures will be available. Note that whilst the events are free (as are the street performers) they do expect you to make a contribution of more than a couple of quid per person

There are street performances on the Royal Mile daily throughout the festival. Free, but you should really contribute something if you like a performance. As many performers point out, you get to decide how much to pay *after* you've seen it, rather than before - which is the case if you go to a ticketed event.
