WHY NOT HAVING A BOARD WITH FODORITES PHOTOS

Ok, I know that by starting this new thread I will be the "new troll in town", but ...who cares. Ready? Here I go!

I've been taking part to Fodors forum for about 2 years so far, and you know what happens when you are curious, you always try to immagine what's a Fodorite like behind a pseudonym. I like VirtualTravel board because members can put a picture linked to their pseudo and they can publish the pictures taken during their trips, and it's SO NICE!

I know I sound like Kramer in Seinfeld who wanted to put all the tennants pictures in the entrance hall so that everybody would get to know each other, and be more sociable....

So I was wondering, wouldn't it be nice to have such a thing here at Fodors? maybe the editors or the webmasters could create a members board where THOSE WILLING TO DO THAT OF COURSE could post their their pictures.

Does anyone have any idea?

FainaAgain Sep 2nd, 2005 03:32 PM

I have no idea, but I like your idea.

The only thing I'd suggest is to have some way to remove a picture in case of stalking (yes, I've heard it happens here), or if for any reason somebody decides to leave permanently (happens often).

Maybe there is a way to post links to personal websites? There are some already.

tpatricco Sep 2nd, 2005 03:33 PM

Pics from 2 NJ/NY GTG's are posted on my photo website.

www.pbase.com/tpatricco

sfowler has a site where she's been kind enough to post many pics as well. Sorry, I don't know the link to it, but think there's a recent thread where she changed the url.

tpatricco Sep 2nd, 2005 03:33 PM

Here's the link to sfowler's site:

FainaAgain Sep 2nd, 2005 03:44 PM

Thank you, Trish, but this won't help, unfortunately. This thread will eventually sink, and the search (dis)function doesn't work.

We need something different, maybe a link on the front page?

Patrick Sep 2nd, 2005 03:47 PM

I don't have a picture to post. Does anyone have one of Brad Pitt we could use? That's close enough.

jody Sep 2nd, 2005 04:13 PM

Oh Please Patrick! Tell me you shave more often than he does and don't have a wispy little beard!

Marianna Sep 2nd, 2005 04:15 PM

Patrick, and I look just like Angelina Jolie! You are too funny!

I do like seeing the pictures of people at get togethers or when they stand in front of web cams as you did, Patrick, and I did also in Sorrento but few saw me. It's nice to put a face to a name.

Patrick Sep 2nd, 2005 04:20 PM

Well of course, jodie. I said his picture would be close enough. I didn't mean to imply he was quite as good looking as I am. Sorry for the confusion.

Seamus Sep 2nd, 2005 04:38 PM

Sorry, Patrick, the Brad Pitt pics bookmarked in my browser would likely not pass editorial scrutiny.

alya Sep 2nd, 2005 06:02 PM

A while ago we played a dinner party game called 'Who would play me in a movie?'

The problem was that everyone else got to choose who played you.

There was a really obvious Reese Witherspoon, one of the girls we couldn't decide between Jody Forster/Holly Hunter.

Me? - they picked Ellen DeGeneres.

Patrick Sep 2nd, 2005 06:53 PM

Well, alya, it could have been worse. They could have picked Dame Edna.

hdm Sep 2nd, 2005 07:19 PM

So? Who would you pick to play you in the story of your life?

Me? Bette Midler.

alya Sep 2nd, 2005 07:22 PM

Patrick (aka Brad) - OMG! You're right, I did get off lightly! But it would have been nice to have been voted someone a little bit more ‘glamorous’

I hate the guy! He was 'big' in the UK but I always managed to avoid his talk shows, not my kind of humour I'm afraid.

I suppose I do share a quirky sense of humour with Ellen DG and she does seem like a h*ll of a lot of fun. I’d invite her to a Dinner Party anytime :-)

Now be honest, who would really play you? Perhaps I should start a new thread!

No, probably best not too – after all who would be really honest? We’d have lots of Sean Connery’s, Johnny Depp’s and J Lo’s!

alya Sep 2nd, 2005 07:23 PM

hdm,

Who would I choose? Anyone Dead or Alive? And they don't have to look anything like me?

Dead, Jayne Mansfield, good old fashioned glamour - plus, we share a feature or 2 :-)

Alive, Emma Thompson, one of the best!

tuscanlifeedit Sep 2nd, 2005 07:40 PM

My friend who is a somewhat known actor thinks Drew Barrymore should play me. I would like to see Alfre Woodward as me in my life story. I'm not black, but I like her soulful womanly ways and appearance. I've always wanted Alfre Woodard to play me, and Drew Barrymore may be a bit like young me, but Alfre is more like me noa.

Hey BATUFFOLINA, can we hold off this project until I look better, LOL!

diddl_maus Sep 2nd, 2005 09:29 PM

Glad to share my picture

BATUFFOLINA Sep 3rd, 2005 08:13 AM

Thank you Sabine for the link, I couldn't see any picture of you but I loved your site and I think you are a wonderfully strong woman.

peeky Sep 3rd, 2005 08:57 AM

Which person is sea urchin on the web site? There are four or five people milling around in Sorrento.

Marilyn Sep 3rd, 2005 10:12 AM

I wouldn't dare say who I think should be cast as me -- I've met too many fodorites who might disagree! Besides, my self-image is a good 20 years younger than the real me.

If you want to see some of the SF area fodorites, there are photos from 2 GTG's to be found here:

http://www.worldisround.com/articles/23795/index.html

http://www.worldisround.com/articles/96984/

And the recent San Antonio GTG here:

http://www.worldisround.com/articles/195836/index.html

There was a really fascinating thread several years ago when I first came on this board in which people wrote how they imagined each other. It was quite amusing.

BATUFFOLINA Sep 3rd, 2005 10:44 AM

Thank you Marilyn! It's so nice to see who's behind some Fodorite nicknames. I got to see 2 lovely lady-Fodorites (among others: Marilyn and FainaAgain. Thanks for sharing.

Marilyn Sep 3rd, 2005 10:44 AM

:-D

sfowler Sep 3rd, 2005 11:46 AM

I'll be played by Judi Dench please :D

Unless I hear a complaint otherwise I will add the above links to the page I maintain.

Marilyn Sep 3rd, 2005 11:49 AM

Hi sfowler! Thanks for serving as Mission Control.

Mary_Fran Sep 3rd, 2005 12:00 PM

Am I alone in not wanting to know other Fodorites politics, age, religion, or appearance? All of those things can create presumptions about folks. I like Fodors a lot because it's such a level playing field. We all just love travel, and that's enough.

tomboy Sep 3rd, 2005 12:13 PM

There's too much identity theft in this world to post photos in the same place as e-mail addresses, which can be linked to identity codes, cr card #s, addresses, and the like. A hacker with enough technical knowledge could pull all that together, and if I were to provide a photo as well, then he could cobble up a (fake) photo ID as well.

BATUFFOLINA Sep 3rd, 2005 12:25 PM

Tomboy: So all the members in other forums should be afraid of identity theft! Thousands of Yahoo users have their pictures in their profiles, me too FYI, and nobody has ever harrassed me. Have a look at www.virtualtourist.com and see that the users are less worried than you in sharing their pictures (both personal ones AND of their trips around the world). If somebody doesn't want to add his/her own picture, FINE.

P_M Sep 3rd, 2005 12:33 PM

I don't worry too much about identity theft. Why would anybody want to be me?

sfowler Sep 3rd, 2005 12:37 PM

That's why I don't post my email and I always use the poster's posting name on that site and never last names.

MelissaHI Sep 3rd, 2005 12:41 PM

Now that I've been to a few GTGs, I think a large part of the fun is the mystery of seeing who everyone is <b>at</b> the GTG--kind of like being unmasked at a masquerade party. Of course, subsequent GTGs (when you already know each other) are still fun, but nothing beats the thrill of your initial one.

jody Sep 3rd, 2005 12:58 PM

I don't understand how posting a picture titled, say, Gigglegirl could lead to identity theft? I'd be much more wary about using Auto fill on my computer! and as Batuffolina says thousands of people post on VT and yahoo and other photo sites without problems!

BTW Sfowler! I wanted Judy Densch! But you are probaby closer to her in height!! HA HA

bookchick Sep 3rd, 2005 01:08 PM

Oh, if you looked at a photo of me, you might turn into a pillar of salt! The few Fodorites who've met me can tell you on a scale of unattractive I'm somewhere between &quot; The Phantom of the Opera&quot; and &quot;sin&quot;!!

BC

P.S. To JOdy and Sally: Neither of you are Dame Judi Dench!

bobthenavigator Sep 3rd, 2005 01:12 PM

I started a thread about 6 years ago that asked Fodorites to name a celebrity that looked like them so we could at least have a visual image in our head. It got to be some laughs. We decided that I was either Bart Starr or Michael Caine.

Jocelyn_P Sep 3rd, 2005 01:20 PM

Can we use an actress/actor we USED to look like? lol

bookchick Sep 3rd, 2005 01:22 PM

Bob the Nav: you said you were Bart Starr, and I told you after some remarks Mr Go had made that he must be Chris Elliot!!!

BC

jody Sep 3rd, 2005 01:24 PM

Booky..S and I both have round faces and so does Judi!

sfowler Sep 3rd, 2005 01:56 PM

:D

bookchick Sep 3rd, 2005 02:04 PM

Well, heck, my whole head is like a huge globe or pumpkin, but I don't think it makes me look like Judi!
