Why is Switzerland CH ?

Car ID stickers show D for Deutschland, F for France, NL for Holland etc., how did Suisse get the CH designation ?
Cantons Helvetica. Switzerland is a confederation of cantons or states. The
latin name for switzerland is Helvetica from some germanic tribe which
got its rear kicked by Julius Caesar, Marius or one of those guys.

I think it is actually Confoederatio Helvitica. This name is used still to refer to the Swiss federal government. Like Joe said it refers to the confederation of Swiss cantons that make up the country and is based on a historical league that was formed.
Confoederatio Helvetica or just Helvetia also makes things easier in Switzerland languagewise - that way they don't have to put all four languages they have on e.g. stamps or coins.

the only correct answer given here is CONFOEDERATIO HELVETICA, the Latin name of the country. Chris' answer is correct, therefore. (I live near Basel)
