Why is my flight to Italy more than my friends?

I am going to Italy next Feb for 6 weeks. I am leaving the USA the last week in Feb and returning the first week in April.

I'm lucky enough to be joined by 2 different friends. One is coming at the beginning of the trip for 10 days. the other is coming for the last 2 weeks. I can find really good airfares for them. But mine is over $200 more , no matter how many days I try to find good fares.
Is this always the case for long trips?
It can't be the dates I'm traveling because I'm trying to fly over with the first friend and fly back with the second friend. BOTH their fares are the same, with mine being more.

Any ideas why?

That is because almost all discounted fares are limited to 30 days out and back. When you start looking at 5+ weeks - discounts seldom apply.

Check the rules of your fare. Many special excursion fares have a maximum stay of 30 days.

Thank you both very much. I didn't realize that, but somewhere in the back of my brain I remember hearing that years ago. I guess I've never had the opportunity to go away for 6 weeks! I won't complain.

Hi kodi, I was going to explain but others have. Yes the longer the stay the higher the ticket price. Unfair but that is the way it is.
