"Thanks for the heads-up, adrienne, I enjoyed reading that other thread. It does sound as though the treatment of clueless tourists on the metro in Budapest is shockingly bad, and has been for years--the other thread explains why. Of course it's silly to post things like "I shall never return", but it's even sillier to pretend that one can always know the right thing to do and do it."

It isn't shockingly bad treatment but a result of the honor system in public transport. Controls are infrequent and if one gets caught, excuses are very seldomn accepted, not just in Hungary but also in other countries.

The reason is that everybody comes up with an excuse and most of them lie.

So one pays the fine (about 25 euro in Budapest) and that's it. If this is the result of an honest mistake, then it's just bad luck.
