Why I read the Sunday NYT travel section

I try to read the Sunday New York Times travel section on the web for articles with titles like these from today. It's free.

---------------

Spain’s Ageless Beauties (historic paradores)

In Northern Italy, a Crossroads of Culinary Arts

Bringing New Life to Some Old European Waterfronts

Where Marie Antoinette Played, Before the Deluge

Where Rome’s Fashionistas Mingle

Dodging Traffic and Pitfalls in Gourmet Georgia (The Country)

I read the the travel section of the NY times regularly, too. Great travel articles.

Yes, yes and yes :)

Absolutely a priceless source of great travel information. My Mom has been cutting and saving articles for years.

My children and I cut out articles and send them to each other :)

I don't think the Times travel section has been as good as it used to be since its major redesign about a year ago.

I have the Sunday Times delivered, and of course, the Travel section is the first I read.I read most of it,but really enjoy the reviews of new or refurbished hotels.I always laugh when I read the letters ,thinking, man if you went to Fodors.com you'd have the answer to that in 2 minutes!

Agree with Howard that the section has gone downhill since the redesign. Especially miss the travel essays on the last page. The still have the odd article of interest, but seem to have crossed over to the travel as deluxe consumer item mind-set.

I no longer save it for last.

Don't you just hate that dopey picture they now publish instead of the travel essay?

HowardR Jul 24th, 2006 10:21 AM

The last two posters have cited some of the shortcomings when led to my attitude about the "new" travel section as few comments above.
Not only are most of the photos "dopey," but in all modesty, I think my pictures are better than most of the ones they've printed!
I have a file full of articles from the Times travel sections of the pastm articles that were and are vital to the planning of many trips. Interestingly, I've clipped maybe one or two at the most in the past year.

Yep, it was really a shame when they changed the format a while back; it's good, but just not as good.

I'm glad I'm not alone in thinking the NYX Travel section was not improved by changing the format and the content. I'm sorry, too, that the Magazine section underwent the same reformatting.

I read a great article on the Kiso Valley of Japan just a few days before my trip to that country. We hiked the valley and it was a real trip highlight.
