David
We've just got in from seeing the Sydney Swans scrape into the Finals (Aussie Rules if anyone is interested) in the dying seconds of the games.
DH is lying on the couch feeling quite dismal as he thinks its going to be a draw (96-0) & he tells me there wd have been more of a chance if we had won the toss. ALso apparently there is the strong potential for rain.

It's raining (showers) here in East London. You can tell your other half that we would have won the urn by now if it weren't for the day we lost to rain earlier on. It is true that Ponting is a useless tosser though.
Aussie rules football? Is that the one with the players in very very tight shorts and the umpires look like butchers?

In between snores he nodded to your comments.
Aussie Rules - yep tight shorts but they have taken the white coats off the umpires & dressed them in yellow kit. Apparently the tragedy there is that they can't be called "white maggots" anymore.
The mexicans (or Victorians "south of the NSW border" are fanatical about the game. It doesmove a lot quicker than cricket.

I see expat Aussies playing it in the park (I live in SW London which may as well become a state of Australia "Old South London".
It looks a bit vigorous. Definitely a game for rough girls.

It's somewhat similar to Gaelic Football except the ball is oval. There are several Irish players over here. NSW is predominantly union & league (rugby that is) & many insultingly refer to Aussie Rules as Aerial Ping Pong.
Aussie Rules players tend to be tall, lean & muscular - the antitheses of the "rugger buggers" who lack necks.
I'm rather agnostic when it comes to the different codes. & let'snot get started on gridiron

David: "witness protection scheme" I think I did make a few enemies in London, yes ! But the move was eventually prompted by coming for the festivals one year - came for a week & moved here 2 months later. Beware, anyone thinking of visiting for the festivals !
Not sure I should ask, but - "sweatties" ?
