Why are flights to Madrid so much lower than other destinations right now?

I want to go to Paris, darn it! I can fly east coast to Madrid for around $650, but Paris is still over $900 (which, I admit, is way down from a week ago). I'm looking at mid-September but thinking I might go to Spain now :)

Any ideas why this is so, oh wise Fodorites?

Where are you seeing $650 for Madrid?

I'm looking at Yapta for 9/22 - 10/9/11 and cheapest nonstop is $846 out of JFK.

Is there a cheap way to get to Paris from Madrid?

AH Mel, just go for Paris! Look at Late Oct early November...Bastille brocante is calling you!!

Joannyc, I plugged in on Orbitz 9/9 to 9/25.

Judy, I've thought about that...

Avalon, you KNOW I am hating the idea of you and D being there without at least a dinner together, but it's too pricey for me this year (so far).
