August 1: Boat ride Bingen to Koblenz (can we combine that day with a trip to Cologne)>
Not really - getting to the boat and the ride will take about 3-4 hours - but maybe abort the boat ride in say Boppard, by which time you will have seen the best of the scenery and then hop a train from there to Cologne- that may work - the Cologne Cathedral is the main sight and it is right next to the train station as is one famous museum - so yes it could be done if you shorten the boar ride. |
If we could do Trier + Luxembourg the same day it would have been perfect but it's seems to be too much for that amount of time.>
Again I disagree- having been to Trier dozens of times the relatively few main sights - the Roman relics - are in a compact area - if you leave Cochem say 9am and be in Trier 10am I can't imagine not seeing those handful of things in 3-4 hours - and if you get to Luxembourg by3-4 pm and settle in - just take a walk around the rather small Luxembourg City town center and sit atop the gorge - there ain't much to see here and this would free up a whole day to: Day trip to Cologne and if you do that it is easy to stop off at Bonn on the way back - a city you never hear anyone talking about going to but I've been there many times on business and it is a delightful smaller big city, for dedcades capital of West Germany - also has the Mozart House: https://www.google.com/search?q=bonn...HUjrCxYQsAQIGw |
Thanks once again Palenq. Maybe will do that last day Trier+ Cochem. You are very convicing. We will see how the rest of the trip goes with the kids !
I really want to see the cathdral of Cologne so we found an option that would leave us must of the time in Rghine+Mosel. on july 30: Leave Munich at 7:15 am (early but it can be done !) arrive at Cologne at 13:05. We have 2 hours and 40 minutes there, 15:53- Cologne - Koblenz 17:06- Koblenz- Cochem (arrival at 17:41) It would be along train trip but I think it's something that can be done. We still have to find an accomodation in Cochem that it's not too far from the train station |
http://www.villa-vinum-cochem.de/ Very close to the train station. I don't think it is a big town and we walked to the castle ourselves. We stayed on the market at Hotel am Markt.

Thanks once again Palenq. Maybe will do that last day Trier + Cochem. You are very convincing. Well that is my subjective opinion after having been In Trier many times and it could be a neat all day day trip from Cochem too - I was thinking of freeing up a day so you could day trip to Cologne but your new plans negate the necessity for that so maybe a leisurely day trip to Trier for the whole day would be best.

We would see once there what we would do. Of course our choices will depend on the weather, the fatigue and more ! It's just a good idea to look at all the options we got, and your are very helpfull in that domain !
We are trying to determine if Cochem is really thes best base for our 4 nights and if a stop over in cologne on the way from Munich is something that can be done. |
