I've met a dozen or so (ex-)Fodorites. Names that come to mind right away are Kavey, Jody, SFowler, MelJ, Sheila Ritchie. And Scarlett's daughter and grandson.

Mathieu Jan 15th, 2008 10:36 AM

Last September we had our first (and now definitely annual - I will help organise) Toronto GTG where about 17 Fodorites met each other. It was awesome ! AnselmeAdorne even travelled from the East Coast of Canada just to be with us and he is every bit as nice in person as he is in e-talk. So are Kodi and Moolyn who organised the event, and many others such as RobJam, MichelParis, KMowatt, BAK, SallyCanuck, ElizabethS and others.

I was in an amateur Theatrical show last November and Kodi and her niece came to see it, as did MichelParis; Anselm remembered after my mentioning it in September and lent his support from afar.

All excellent people, and I look forward to meeting them all again later in the year.

I haven't met any in person yet, though have exchanged emails with a few and am chatting through Facebook with some. I'd love to meet up with other Fodorites when we're in Paris this May (8-18th) and will put out a call for a GTG when the time gets a bit closer. Any takers now?

I have had the pleasure of turning Fodorites into real friends on several occasions. I've traveled in Italy and Switzerland with Judi and Swandav. Subsequently I've met Judi in Lake Tahoe and San Francisco. I've been wine tasting with Bailey and her amazing husband. I've had several dinners with Crazymina. I've had lunch with Suzanna on a couple of occasions. I met BeatChick for brunch and a river cruise in Chicago. Everytime I found a warm and interesting person on the other end of the keyboard. Someday I hope to have Myriam treat me to a tour around Antwerp.

tedgale Jan 15th, 2008 05:53 PM

Mathieu: please put me on the list for any TO GTG -- I would make an attempt to travel to it from Ottawa.

My address is: [email protected]

Mathieu Jan 15th, 2008 07:48 PM

Absolutely, TedGale; You're on the list now. We'll keep you in the loop and look forward to hopefully seeing you.

Well, my DH met Marcy's DH in the parking lot at La Chaine D'Or. Unfortunately, Marcy and I didn't realize until we both got back from our trips that the woman at the next table was a Fodorite.

I've often thought of making an idiot of myself and asking some of the people whom I meet. Actually, on our last trip a high percentage of the other people we met at our stays were not Americans.

Hi tedgale and Mathieu. Yes, I've met both of you, and thanks for the very kind words.

The Toronto GTG was a pleasure and I look forward to seeing everyone again this year.

The only person we have run in to (besides pedestrians) in Europe was easygoer and her husband at Cane y Gatto restaurant in Siena.

However, if you are traveling through the Czech Republic, Poland, Vienna, Croatia, Slovenia or Venice late this Spring, be on the lookout. You could be next!

That might be us....we're in Croatia 4/21 to 5/7, then Paris for 5 nights!

grandmere Jan 18th, 2008 06:25 AM

I've met the Pgh. crowd: Tuscanlifeedit, Sher, and Larry J and enjoyed being with them, although it's been a long time since we've all been together. Also stayed at Coco's wonderful apt. in Dijon, and she is a helpful and friendly woman and hostess. Most recently, I had dinner with Joan Grace in Paris, and that was lots of fun.

Cimbrone Jan 18th, 2008 06:59 AM

I've met starrsville, kybourbon, cocofromdijon, and the very nice gentleman who had the problem with a new york apartment rental listed on expedia--sorry, I've forgotten his name. All delightful people, I must say...

tower Jan 18th, 2008 07:03 AM

Yes...the only Fodorite we've met is none other than the very catchy name EKSCRUNCHY! We corresponded prior to our respective trips to China...and planned to meet for dinner in Shanghai...so happy that we did.(She's one of the top foodies on this forum...we're just amateurs). EK made reservations for the three of us at a superb resto in Shanghai, and she was staying at the hotel next door to ours. We also visited the old Jewish ghetto together the day before.
All I can say about meeting EK is that it was certainly a major highlight...a very bright, energetic, exceotionally pleasant young woman who is taking in all the world has to offer, with a personality that goes far beyond her postings here and on the Asia board.

Unfortunately, I couldn't be at the CTG in Pasadena a few weeks after our return. Guenmai ran a great one from what I heard. Next time.

Thanks EK...Roz also endorses these statements!

I just saw Sue's(grandmere) post. Yes, we had a nice meal at Au Gourmand in Oct.

Other friends Pat & Jim Hutchinson(Laidback)we joined another night at Violon d'Ingres..have known them for a number of years.

Underhill and I have been good friends for years..just never seem to be at the same place at the same time....

LJ Jan 18th, 2008 08:38 AM

Mathieu, AnselmAdorne, TedGale, SallyCanuck, ElizabethS, Michel Paris, BAK, Danni: you folks are just the beginning of the list of great reasons to go to a GTG in TO again...I have seen Kodi a number of times since then and count her as a friend.

I look forward to getting together again and we must have 'hdm' this time. Maybe Toedtoes will be in town (the biggest Cananda-lover of them all!)?

Fodors is the first forum I ever participated in (7-8 years ago?). I do enjoy meeting the contributors in person. However, I was moved by the expressions of friendship that poured out when (Wes?)Fowler died several years ago and when folks found out that 'Rex' was challenged by NHL...I learned that it may be fun to meet for real, but the relationships forged by the exchange of information don't require that for them to be warm and genuine.

USNR Jan 18th, 2008 08:51 AM

We are bound for China in late April. So if you see an old man who looks like Andy Rooney's younger (and happier) brother, it may be me. I promise not to bite.

AmericanAunt Jan 20th, 2008 04:19 PM

I have enjoyed the replies I have received on this site, but I'm curious:
At what point does one decide that one would like to meet another 'postee'??

Most people don't publish email addresses...so...

I had one reply from an ex-pat living in Paris to which I would've loved to reply, "Could we meet for a café quand je suis là?", but I feared I would come off looking forward. Please advise!

goddesstogo Jan 20th, 2008 04:26 PM

Awww, LJ, how nice! :">

I haven't met that many fodorites but here's my list and please forgive me if I miss someone. I've met

Coco
Ira and his Lady Wife
Toedtoes
kodi
raquel
SallyCanuck
and
starrs.

Oh dear, I'm pretty sure I've forgotten someone who was at the Toronto mini GTG!
