Holy Swiss bells, I've never seen this amount of snow in mid November before. I have to wade through the stuff to find my compost container. It almost reaches my hips.

They are opening up all the local ski resorts this weekend (don't know about the major ones though). Cross-country skiing is superb as well.

It's a great start to hopefully a very snowy winter. We had so little of it last year. Our farmer's almanac says: lots of snow in November, lots of warmth in January. Hope it's not true.

I am looking out of the window of my office and all I see is white roofs, white gardens, some white fields, which is not bad at 650 m asl. Some ski resorts in Wallis open up this weekend, also in Jura, they were on Swiss french speaking television extensively. For ski resorts, it is important to keep the actual snow as a first layer, well dammed, as long as possible.
I don't mind the snow in the mountains, but it can be a nuisance in town... And I don't mind a bit of sun in January...

Hi Baldrick,

How right you are. I'm at 900 meters in Central Switzerland and we are hoping this first layer will stay awhile. If not, we'll have to start all over again and that can be frustrating!

I just ski locally and don't know too many other ski resorts. I have been to Arosa for a weekend with a group and everyone adored it. Great skiing conditions, nice town, nice restaurants on the pistes, etc.

My cousin really enjoyed Adelboden last year and would like me to join her this year. She said the skiing is a bit easier there than in Arosa.

There are so many ski resorts that it really depends on what you are looking for.

I can't help with ski resorts but we've already gotten a couple of inches in Stuttgart over the past few days and it's supposed to stay cold through the weekend. Quite a difference from last year, when we had only one snow storm of any significance and that wasn't until February!

The ground is white, has been for some days. But next weekend it gets warmer, so I guess it will be gone. Last year the "staying snow" didnīt come before January, later than ever in my 50+ lifetime. I hope it will not be the same this year. November and December are just too dark without snow.

A friend of mine in Karlsruhe, Germany said they just had their first snow.

I live in Plymouth, Michigan, and it's snowed, but not yet enough to stay on the ground. Next week's weather is supposed to be "sloppy and stormy", but the weatherman said he's unsure yet if it means rain or snow.

South Dakota - some know it as the Great Frozen North - has no snow. And temps in the 50s and 60s F. I hate snow, though it does look good in photos.

schuler - I've been looking at the webcams for Pilatus, Titlis and Rigi for about a week now and just seeing all that snow up there...ahh!! I wish I were back there now! The only problem with the one webcam on Pilatus is that the snow seems to have built up on it (or around it), so the 360 degree panoramic picture is...well..of snow.

Whistler is opening earlier than planned, on the 17th, with 102 cm mid-mountain. My youngest son has his equipment lined up by the door... let the money flow.

Snow here in East Germany too. At home (356 m) we have 15 cm. The Erzgebirge mountains south of Dresden have 50 - 90 cm. Lifts are open, cross-country tracks groomed.

Look forward to my first skiing this winter ;-)
