Peg, That was so funny, it was almost worth it just to have your story now.

Not a nightmare, but funny. One of my husband's friends went to Spain with us. It was her first time out of the US. She called in a panic a few days before we were leaving. She couldn't pack all the water she needed for a week in her suitcase. That gives you an idea of the trip. My husband was incredibly patient and she had a wonderful time.

My husband is the best. He usually has one or two things he really wants to do and the rest of the time patiently tramps with me and our friends through church after church and museum after museum. He knows before I do that I am getting hungry. Like a kid, I get cranky. When I started sobbing once because we had only one day in Venice, he promised we would go back just by ourslves and we did for a whole week. Then when I had a horrible migrane and spent a morning in bed (in Venice, no less), he was so patient and said it was OK. He seems delighted when I order a meal or get a room using another language, no matter how much I've mangled it and no matter whether we get what we wanted or not. The only time he is impatient is when I call home repeatedly to check on our pets and he is good even about that most of the time.

Other best companions: My kids when they were young and ten of my best Art students when I was teaching. I took them on their first trip out of the country to Italy. Seeing them see the Sistine Chapel and Venice for the first time was so rewarding.

My wife of 5 years and 7 monthes. We have spent the total of a year in europe together, before we had babies, we 30 and 35, and although we got on each others nerves we never had a blow out. We are so comfortable with each other every day or two we would have a solo day and do whatever each of was wanted. We would meet up, share our expereinces and go back to the hostel and get crazy. It's true. We havn't traveled together abroad for 3 years, but man I remember those time. Plus the times we shared together.
