Who has been to Abbey Road?

Is there a mob of people trying to do the Beatles thing?

Brazilnut Jul 8th, 2005 02:52 PM

I was there back in 2001, had my picture taken crossing the road, and met a few other Beatles' fans there - not a mob. But then, I was there in November, it might be different during the summer.

I have been there twice. Once with a Beatles walking tour and it was not very busy either time.

My DH and I and three daughters did the Abbey Road photograph in Oct 2003. Unfortunately, we waited at the right crosswalk forever and could not get a photo because of the traffic!

We went to the one next to it and took a "faux Abbey Road" shot. We had plenty of people telling us we had the "wrong crosswalk." We said "we know" and had fun anyway.

I went there in June 2001 and there was no "mob". To be honest there was our group of 4 and 2 others. We did the walk across the street but be careful as its a very busy street. Don't forget to sign the wall in front of the studio.

My brother took pictures of my kids walking, then photoshopped them into the album cover. It looks real.

I've been on an August afternoon, and like others have said, there were other people there, but nothing like a crowd, much less a mob. There was plenty of vehicle traffic on the road, though.

Next time I go, I'm going to try it early on a Saturday or Sunday morning. There should be less traffic then, I hope.

My husband wants to go - which tube stop do we use?

Robespierre Jul 9th, 2005 02:39 PM

St. Johns Wood (Jubilee Line).

It's not exactly mobbed. I usually drive along there a few times each week, and it's not that much busier than any other zebra crossing.

I've been there. There were a few people, but no mob. People were generally curteous and took turns walking across the street.

We were there one evening last month. No one there but us. It was fun to see it. Unfortunately, my pictures didn't come out, as it was getting too dark! Poor planning on our part.

I used to live on that corner -- the traffic island from which people take their photographs was in front of my kitchen window. While there is a constant stream of visitors from all over the world it is seldom crowded. I usually saw just one group at a time. The 139 bus will takes you directly there, if I remember correctly.

As was said above, the traffic is very heavy most of the time, so be careful and quick.

Was there for the first time on Sunday July 3rd at about 7PM. About a dozen people were there. Took pictures from traffic island to avoid the cars. This angle is not the same as LP cover. You need to stand right in the middle of the street to get that shot.

I've always thought it would be ultra-hip for the city of London to park a vintage "beigey" colored VW Beetle at the side of the road with a "28 IF" license plate, just for grins and for the benifit of tourists. But, as has been said, it is a busy place, traffic wise, and I suppose that, no matter how cool it really would be, it would only ad to the problems. It is amazing that a photo on an LP from 30+ years ago has such staying power.

As an aside the cover shots for the red and blue "best ofs" were shot at EMIs headquarters in London - you can apparently get in if you ask nicely (well you could a few years ago)

Diablo, nice thought, but London isn't a theme park. What's more Abbey Road is in a very smart neighbourhood and I'm sure the residents would have a LOT to say about an old banger parked outside their houses LOL
