Whites in September

In the U.S. it is customary to not wear white pants, shoes, etc. after Labor Day, 1st Monday in September. But is the same true for Lisbon? Can I pack my white pants and other light clothing?

Degas Sep 9th, 2003 02:42 PM

pebbles, they arrest people who arrive in lisbon after 1 sep in white pants. Minimum jail time is 5 days, more if you are wearing white socks and shoes.

Be safe and wear all black, even your undergarments. You wouldn't want a super-european to snicker at you.

I recently read in In Style magazine that it is perfectly appropriate to wear white jeans all year round. However, that was the US version of In Style, and I can't comment upon Lisbon.

pebbles, play it safe and wear all black except for white tennis shoes. White belt is optional.

Baby, if you're comfortable in white pants (and even better if you look HOT in them) wear them..NOBODY is going to even think about the date if you are/do!

I hope I am not shot on sight when I show up in Italy in light tan slacks in a few weeks !!!

FainaAgain Sep 9th, 2003 03:53 PM

O Janda, I hope no black dye will be forced on you!

pebbles, it depends on what bam bam's wearing. if it's that saber-tooth tiger thing, i don't know........

Now, if you were going to Rome, to visit the Vatican...there's those paper pants......

Just in case Pebbles wanted a helpful answer....

this was the most cogent explanation I could found (google search: White Labor Day)

I have no idea what's customary in Lisbon, but why on earth would you want to pack anything as light in color as white (pants particularly) for a European trip?!?!? My incredulity is based on practicality..white gets dirty immediately, and unless you intend to do laundry everyday (or have it done), you will only get one wear out of white. Dark pants are much more practical. Seasonal or not.

I stopped wearing white the day I gained enough weight that I thought it made me look fat, and these days that's pretty much year-round.

However, I am in the "do what you want" corner, and if you're a type of person who can wear white while sipping red wine and not get any one you regardless of what country you're in, I say go for it.

Just be sure those pants are White Paper!! If so, you Must wear a thong!!
Then the saying "two cats fighting in a paper bag" will mean something .

Seriously-what happens when Paper clothing gets wet, if one is caught in a rain shower?

amp322 Sep 9th, 2003 06:09 PM

I say go for it. I brought white jeans to Europe last year, and I really enjoyed NOT wearing black all the time. Just make sure you wear them Euro-style ...with dark colored thong undies underneath! (I'm serious! Saw that everywhere this year! What's up with that?!!)

Hi!

Here in Portugal Labor day is on May, 1... :-)

And you can wear whatever you want that no one will even notice.

Regardin white socks... huh... are not much appreciated around here. Peoiple who use it under dark pants are called "broken ankles" :-)

And of course white is very fashionable this winter, particularly when combined with black.

Hi Pebbles,

Actually the rule does not apply to Florida.

donnabee Sep 10th, 2003 04:51 AM

Who cares what you wear - be your own person and wear what you want.

m_kingdom Sep 10th, 2003 06:21 AM

Who's looking at you dear?

mclaurie Sep 10th, 2003 06:39 AM

Was recently told by a young NYC fashionista that white is the new black! Even shoes! Even after Labor Day! Who knew? ((h))

Degas Sep 10th, 2003 07:15 AM

that just proves that if you leave something long enough in your closet it will eventually come back in style.

I have a couple of lime green leisure suits that are all ready to get back in to action. Dryclean the ruffled white shirt with the big collar and away we go!

lillehavfrue Sep 10th, 2003 07:20 AM

White is the new black? You mean I can go and buy myself some bright white sneakers and be hip and cool?
