White Wines Recommendation
Can anyone recommend a good white wine while in Florence?
|
When in Rome - or Florence, as the case may be...mostly I drink the local &/or house wines while in Italy unless I am somewhere where I desire a particular type (of wine). You will be in the middle of Tuscany which is of course a major red wine producer. The best whites are said to come from the San Gimignano region. You'll find some Chards, Pinot Blancs & Vernaccias. Pomino (east of Florence) also produces some fine whites. I would still suggest you just ask in the restaurant or wine shop. They'll not likely steer you wrong.

I work out @ CIC by the way...how funny is that...

when traveling in good wine countries (france, italy, switzerland) i just order "house white wine". haven't been disappointed yet. it will likely be served in a small glass carafe or clay pitcher.

I recently returned from 2+ weeks in Italy and did not encounter any superior Italian whites, particularly in Tuscany. You can go the "house white" route or you can inquire about a red that will suit your taste.
(Or, of course, if the wine list is international, go with a white burgundy from France.) |
Antinori is a famous Tuscan vinyard.

I had a nice Banfi Sav Blanc with lunch at Castello Banfi. ((b))

Hi Larry,
I really like Orvieto Classico, although I don't know how common it will be in Florence. Buon viaggio! |
There are excellent white wines from Friuli. Or you can always go with an Orvieto white. I would not think that the house whites in most Florentine restaurants will be all that memorable.

The challenge in Tuscany is that you are smack dab in the middle of Chianti & big Tuscan red country. I would still suggest taking suggestions from the waiter or wine store owner (if buying btls). In the case of a restaurant, many may even let you sample or taste. The Pomini area actually utilizes Fench style grapes & wine-making, but I am uncertain how easy, or difficult, it may be to get those wines.
