Thank you for the tips!

I ordered the Jack Purcells in black - will be interested to see how different they look from the Chucks, in person - and how they feel. My Chucks are black low tops.

I also ordered the Superga classic in dusty rose.

I may go try on the neons, too.

raincitygirl Jul 6th, 2014 10:07 AM

I love my Supergas, can even fit my orthotics in them.

NewbE Jul 7th, 2014 11:23 AM

I have always liked the look of Supergas...one day! My sneaker collection is embarrassingly large as it is.

Cowboy1968 Jul 7th, 2014 11:44 AM

Wearing trainers or white trainers had never been an issue in Europe, with one exception:
What struck me as a kid (growing up in a touristy region) was that also Americans which I then considered to be very, very old (i.e. 60+, but, hey, I was in my teens!) would wear them.
And it still is a bit that way... not that ANYone would spare ONE thought about it..

sandralist Jul 7th, 2014 12:03 PM

A fashionable English-speaking tourist in Italy does not wear socks with white sneakers.

IMDonehere Jul 7th, 2014 12:05 PM

Just go naked, no one will notice. OK just barefoot.

kerouac Jul 7th, 2014 12:09 PM

I have seen naked people on the street in Paris and even in the metro. And yes, everybody did act as though they were invisible.

annhig Jul 7th, 2014 01:23 PM

and indeed socks with sandals is thought to be very non-U, though as DH says, it does stop the tops of your feet getting sunburnt.

but really, NO-ONE CARES.

NewbE Jul 8th, 2014 08:23 AM

Socks with sandals is the new In thing in the fashion world--no, really, lol, it is! Has been for 6 months or so--which probably means its on its way Out. Of course, this may fall under the category of things leggy young models can wear that would look schlumpy on the rest of us.

But it does prove that fashion rules are made to be broken, so wear what you want.

kerouac Jul 8th, 2014 10:39 AM

Basically, when we see socks in sandals in Paris, there are 3 possible guesses about the origin of the visitor: 1. Germany 2. German Switzerland 3. Poland

IMDonehere Jul 8th, 2014 10:59 AM

We used to share a floor with the Slavic Studies graduate students and they would wear sandals and Socks in a snowstorm.

You are raised a certain way, and I would rather put mayo on pastrami than wear sandals and socks.

NewbE Jul 8th, 2014 11:05 AM

And yet, behold, gentlemen:

If you ladies feel emboldened, here is a slideshow of acceptable sock-with-sandal combos:

This is why I enjoy reading and talking about fashion: its ways are mysterious.

kerouac Jul 8th, 2014 11:09 AM

As are the people silly enough to follow each and every trend they see in the paper.

Revulgo Jul 8th, 2014 12:07 PM

< "Fanny" means something different in British English > LOL

NewbE Jul 8th, 2014 01:00 PM

Why so judgmental? Dedicated followers of fashion are enjoying themselves and providing entertainment for the people watchers of the world.

It seems to me that if the capris-and-a-sturdy-pair-of-walking-shoes crowd here were really confident in themselves, they wouldn't spend so much time denigrating those who are interested in fashion trends.

bvlenci Jul 8th, 2014 01:15 PM

My Italian husband occasionally wears socks with sandals, but then he's an engineer, so fashion is beneath his dignity.

And, believe it or not, in my youth (mid 1980s) I worked with a young English guy, in the Netherlands, who wore socks with sandals all year long. Wool socks in the winter, cotton in the summer.

My daughters are interested in fashion trends, but they have their own way of dressing, and don't try to ape the fashions in other countries when they visit them. I've never had much interest in fashion trends, which is perhaps why I married an engineer. I have certain things I like and can't find anywhere, which probably means they're out of fashion. So I have a dressmaker make them for me.

bvlenci Jul 8th, 2014 01:18 PM

I just noticed that the ad at the top of this page, and the ad at the right, are for sneakers (Italian companies). Clever, aren't they?

IMDonehere Jul 8th, 2014 01:19 PM

Among the things I could care less about:

Fashion
NASCAR; and
People describing their illnesses

flygirl Jul 9th, 2014 08:34 AM

And my black Jack Purcells/dusty rose Supergas came in today. I will probably put gel inserts into them anyway, but yes, they are more supportive than the Chucks.

NewbE Jul 9th, 2014 10:00 AM

Oh, good, flygirl, I'm glad they worked for you.
What do you think of the Supergas? How would you compare them to Chucks, or Jacks?

IMD, clearly you COULD care less about fashion, since you are reading this thread :-D

flygirl Jul 9th, 2014 10:05 AM

NewbE

Are you in any Facebook group, perchance?

They just got delivered to work and I haven't walked in them yet. I just tried them on. They seem comfy.

I would say the Supergas look like Keds on steroids.

NewbE Jul 9th, 2014 07:01 PM

No, flygirl, I have a FB account but hardly ever use it.

IMDonehere Jul 9th, 2014 07:07 PM

IMD, clearly you COULD care less about fashion, since you are reading this thread

I also read about plane crashes and local sewer problems.

NewbE Jul 10th, 2014 07:56 AM

IMD, I was actually funning you about the phrase "I could care less", when I believe you meant the opposite.

Sewer problems are of enormous practical interest when they arise, I imagine. Plane crashes are more of a rubbernecking situation. But I digress.

KTtravel Jul 10th, 2014 08:10 AM

I knew I was a trend setter!

colduphere Jul 10th, 2014 08:17 AM

This thread is two weeks old. I suspect something else is now the rage.

flygirl Jul 10th, 2014 08:23 AM

I ordered a half size smaller of each, from Zappos, last night, and they are sitting in my office right now. Wow.

NewbE Jul 10th, 2014 08:43 AM

flygirl, I know! Zappos can be so freaky fast, it's as if they KNEW what you were going to order :-D

flygirl Jul 10th, 2014 08:54 AM

Indeed!

The half size down is better, but, the JP's have those little nibs at the bottom and one is slightly misplaced and digs into my instep. Nicht Gut. Darn it. I will walk on my carpet at home with both and see if I can tolerate the larger size or not. Or just return both and re-order the smaller size.

Verysneakers Jul 14th, 2014 03:15 AM

"Isn't it fun that white sneakers are finally the RAGE in Europe?"

What ? Are Americans goint out sometimes of their country ? I'm wearing white sneakers since decades now, and most of my friends have white kicks in their collections.
The sneakers industry is quite strong in Europe, with European brands and designers like Goliath, Raf Simmons, Kris Vanasche, Veja... and they have all white sneakers in their lines.
I got around 50 pair of sneakers, and only 3 pairs of Nike..

Dukey1 Jul 14th, 2014 04:06 AM

OK, during the past two weeks I have been in Amsterdam, Paris, Munich, Verona, and now in Rome. I can assure you that white sneakers are not any more evident now than I have ever seen them over here and I have been to Europe every year for the last five years.

Some folks simply need attention.

annhig Jul 14th, 2014 12:45 PM

50 pairs? I don't have anything like 50 pairs of shoes let alone just "sneakers".

but I see that verysneakers may have an ulterior motive for his/her post, which could explain it.

IMDonehere Jul 14th, 2014 12:49 PM

I own 50 shoes, some match.

nanabee Jul 14th, 2014 02:30 PM

Darn, I'd been saving my white sneakers for such an event and now they are old and moldy looking. :)

IMDonehere Jul 14th, 2014 04:18 PM

Nanabee

That might work. Ask the fashionistas if green and white sneakers are also in this year.

annhig Jul 15th, 2014 03:59 AM

Ah, the old green flash. I remember them well. in fact I may have a pair going mouldy at the back of the wardrobe.

spaarne Jul 15th, 2014 08:33 AM

White marshmallows can now be worn in New Jersey.

IMDonehere Jul 15th, 2014 08:56 AM

Those sneakers have truck struts built in.

NYCFoodSnob Jul 17th, 2014 06:54 AM

Of course the only obvious problem with this post is that the writer wasn't in any of these cities during Fashion Week, which is a major foundational detail in the OP's post.

<i><font color=#555555>"Some folks simply need attention."</font></i>

Which seems precisely the reason why someone would take the time to come here, post something silly and irrelevant, while supposedly traveling to five major cities in Europe. LOL.

bvlenci Jul 18th, 2014 01:34 PM

Snobby mentions "... a major foundational detail in the OP's post".

Does she have amnesia or does she always refer to herself in the third person?
