White after Labor Day
My husband and I will be in Rome and Sorrento starting 9/17/06. I need some advise on clothing for me. Do they wear white after Labor Day?? I'm probably giving away my age with this question...56. I assume Rome differs from the Amalfi Coast or no???? Help!!!!

Hi Louise,
I thought that it was no white **shoes** after Labor Day, except in Florida and Las Vegas. Besides, everyone in Europe wears nothing but black all year round. :) ((I)) |
The AC is more relaxed and if you are concerned with your style it is casual resort chic. Depending on the weather, if it is nice and warm wear white.
In Rome it might be cooler and the Fall Season style will most likely be out and about. Wear winter white. No hard rules these days, people wear most anything and still can look in style with the right cuts and material. Have fun. |
We have our own daft fashion 'rules' in Europe.
This is not one of them. We don't even have labor day here! |
>We don't even have labor day here!<
What is the May 1 holiday? ((I)) |
It should have read: "We don't even have Labor Day on the first Monday after the first Sunday in September, here in Europe".
The psych attendants on the ward where I go lock myself up, every once in a while... seem to wear white all year round - - but I suspect that few of them have been to Rome, and fewer still to Sorrento. Best wishes, Rex |
Hmm...I don't think I'd risk it. You can't be sure you won't run across Serial Mom while on vacation... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FByo6a5fJtQ |
I will say one thing about white clothes in general.
We were in capri in june. There was some great people watching at the port in midday - with all the ladies in their white pants/skirts. Here are some things I learned 1. don't wear white pants unless they are made of thick material (so you cant see through them -duh!) 2. don't wear white skirt in the day, unless you have a heavy-duty slip to wear underneath. 3. don't wear white pants/skirt with black undies. |
Leave the white at home if you're talking about pants or shoes; bring it if you're talking about tops. (Have you discovered the store called White House Black Market where all the clothes are either black or white? I love that place!)
|
How did that rule start anyway?
|
The rule was promulgated post-Civil War to pacify those whose rule-making capabilities had been stripped away by General Sherman.
Actually, I think wearing THIN white material is an excellent idea, especially if you ARE "people watching." |
bluestar, that is SO funny!!! I love it.
|
Neither labor day nor that rule exist here in Europe!
|
We're not taking anything white in case we get sloppy eating--the stains would show more!!

LouiseT, if you want to see what tourist wear in Sorrento go to the Sorrento webcame. The website is: http://www.sorrentoinfo/com/webcam.asp
You will see people wearing all kinds of outfits, lol. It is a fun website, you will no doubt enjoy it. Regarding white I will say I don't know one person that I personally know in Italy that ever wears white shoes except for one friend who owns a pair of navy/white spectator style loafers. And I don't wear white shoes even here in CA. But not sure if you are talking about shoes or clothes. I don't wear white clothes as I don't find white practical when travelling. As dotsy said.... Do have a wonder time in Italy, and don't forget to check out the Sorrento webcam! |
