Whiskey or Poitin Distillery Tour

We leave next week for Dublin (2 nights), Doolin (1 night), Adare (1 night) and then in the Kenmare area for 4 nights. My husband and son would really like to visit a working whiskey distillery. I read that there are only three active whiskey distilleries in Ireland, but which one welcomes visitors? (The one in Northern Ireland is out of the question due to our fixed itinerary.) Second to a whiskey distillery, it might be fun for them to see a poitin distillery. I read that they sell it at Bunratty, but does anyone know of a place you can see it made?

Thanks!

Kathy, if you find a poitin still, the "Revenue Man" might like to know about it. ;)

Jameson's in Dublin has tours. I'm on my son's laptop and haven't quite mastered copying and pasting. But if you google Jameson's tours it'll give you a link for the website.

Poteen is nothing like the old illegal stuff that they used to make. It doesn't strip paint and is quite smooth. Now it's legal there are a couple of note, Knockeen Hills and Bunratty, buit I don't think you can visit these.

Jameson's in Dublin is no longer a working distillery. To see the product being made, you need to go to Midleton, east of Cork city, and reachable from Kenmare. See http://www.jamesonwhiskey.com/Herita...r-Centres.aspx

And while they tour the distillery in Midleton you could visit www.sdyolzari.com and treat yourself to a bit of bling ;).

Lovely man and interesting designs.

You can visit The Winery in Bunratty and they will give you a wee sample of poteen but they don't have tours. Perhaps if you are particularly persuasive....

Kathy, I went to a whiskey tasting a few months put on my our San Diego Irish Networking group. They had Dr. John Teeling from Cooley's Irish Whiskey speak and we got to taste all of their whiskey brands. And I might say, they were extremely generous in providing samples! Unfortunately, I did not have a designated driver that night so could not partake as much as I would have liked. Cooley is the only Irish owned Irish whiskey distillery. They have an old distillery in Kilbeggan, Westmeath, right off the N4 (about one hour from Dublin). I would think this one would be the best...here is the website.
