While in Rome for 8 days, what 1 or 2 day side trips to take?

I will be in Rome late this month (November) for 8 days. Can someone recommend any side trips to take from Rome to other cities for 1 or 2 days?

I really appreciate any help!!

Lena
Either Pompeii and/or Herculeneum, or Ostia Antica. Many tour companies do both out of Rome as one day tours, leave early and return late. Ostia Antica of course can be done by train from Rome. For that matter so can Pompeii, but requires a train change in Naples.

Jim,
Thank you for the response! Besides the towns you mentioned, would you recommend leaving Rome to go to Naples or Amalfi Coast for a few days?

Lena

From Rome, Orvieto and Tivoli.
If you spend a nite or 2, then hit Pompeii enroute to Sorrento, and see Positano and Capri from there.

There are three good resources for train schedule information that might be relevant to your trip.
You may wish to become familiar with one or serval of them.

Perhaps the most useful is www.trenitalia.com - - the website for the Italian rail system.

For a little added "familiarity" (if you are from the US), you can also find major routes on www.raileurope.com - - or even on their toll free phone line 1-800-4-EURAIL. It is NOT recommended that you buy your tickets from them. It will cost you substantially more than simply waiting until you get to Europe.

Finally, if you are going to other countries besides Italy, you might want to bookmark the site http://mercurio.iet.unipi.it/misc/timetabl.html (note: no "www"). It contains a link to the website to the rail system for every country in Europe, including www.trenitalia.com

On the separate question of a "side trip", many people find Florence (90 minutes by train, despite the 180 mile distance) a good "day" trip (or overnighter). Assisi (perhaps better for overnight) or Orvieto (closer) also have merit.

Best wishes,

Rex
